In essence, I had been trying to write a second book on a subject for which there was no first book. I planned to reread as theological debate a number of texts that, with the exception of Christine de Pizan's Ditié de Jehanne d'Arc, had scarcely sustained any critical reading at all, at least to anglophone audiences. Not only was there little critical literature, but in some cases there was neither an authoritative edition nor an English translation. In the final stages of writing, therefore, I have been guided by two principles, neither of which was among my initial intentions: to introduce each text in some detail, taking little for granted, and to offer primarily the conclusions of my research at each stage in the discussion, in as succinct a manner as possible. This is not to suggest, by any means, that I feel unconditionally wedded to the ideas expressed here. I am well aware that the discovery of even a single neglected manuscript of any one of these texts could require a reshuffling of the entire picture. In the interest of clarity and accessibility, whenever possible I have quoted from English translations, with full reference to the original in the footnotes. For the same reasons, appendices with English translations of several key texts have been included. Except where otherwise noted, all translations from the French are mine. Also, for the sake of brevity I have abridged the titles of the two crucial treatises De quadam puella and De mirabili victoria to DQP and DMV, respectively. Other titles have occasionally been less drastically abbreviated after the full title has been given. To many people I owe considerable gratitude. In the course of rewriting, some very detailed comments and corrections offered by readers no longer found their place in my book. Their comments have, nevertheless, significantly influenced the final outcome. Those whom I wish to thank for reading the whole book include Charles T. Wood, Nadia Margolis, Marcia Colish and Thelma Fenster. My appreciation goes as well to Charity Cannon Willard and Susan Haskins, who each read and commented on one chapter. I also wish to acknowledge my debt to Kathleen Saltmarsh for providing an early sounding board for my ideas, and to Mary-Ann Stadtler-Chester and Raquel Halty for the privilege of Cambridge parking, making accessible the sanctuary of the Widener Library, where most of my research was completed. For their gracious reception during my visits to the Centre Jeanne d'Arc in Orléans, I wish to acknowledge the late Régine Pernoud and the current director, Françoise Michaud-Fréjaville. Additionally, I owe Raquel Halty thanks for

Description:
Joan of Arc arrived at the French court claiming to be sent by God to come to the aid of the dauphin Charles. Most studies of Joan focus on her political expediency, but the starting point of this book is her assertion that she was sent by God: it is the first real exploration of the application of
