I first learned about this idea at the International Congress on Medieval Studies in May 2014, and decided at that time to organize sessions to study the effect of the council specifically on Jews and Muslims. The last four canons of the council directly addressed contact between Christians and those two non-Christian groups, who often lived amongst Christians and/or interacted with them to some degree. Dr Irven Resnick of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga generously agreed to help organize the sessions, and in the end also presented his own re- search. From 23 to 28 November 2015, at several academic institutions in Rome, international scholars presented over 140 papers on numerous topics connected in some way to the Council; however, one full day, 25 November, held at the Villa Aurelia (through the generosity of the American Academy in Rome), was devoted to four sessions on Muslims and Jews under Christian rule, and the consequences of the canons on those two groups. The variety of papers presented in those ses- sions added greatly to the breadth and depth of topics and questions explored at the conference. At the conclusion of the day, the idea was presented to us to publish a volume of the papers, and thus, led to this volume. Other volumes continue to emerge from the conference: Literary Echoes of the Fourth Lateran Council in England and France, 1215-1405, ed. by Maureen Boulton (Toronto: Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies, forthcoming); The Fourth Lateran Council and the Development of Canon Law and the ‘ius commune’, ed. by A. A. Larson & A. Massironi (Turnhout: Brepols, forthcoming); and The Fourth Lateran Council and the Crusade Movement: The Impact of the Council of 1215 on Latin Christendom and the East, ed. by Jessalynn Bird and Damian Smith (Turnhout: Brepols, 2018). Many, many thanks to my co-editor, Irven Resnick, who recruited many of the outstanding scholars in our four sessions. Most of their papers are within this volume, along with others who responded enthusiastically to our call for additional essays for the publication. Irven initiated and negotiated the proposal to Brepols, and provided me with invaluable advice during the editing process. It has been an honor to work with these eleven scholars before, during, and after the conference in the formation of this volume. In addition, it was a tremendous privilege to have joined the organizers in the production of the conference; I have
