Les actualités 252 III lntroduction Many Junior Certificate students, even though they have studied French for three years or more and have covered all of their course, do not do themselves justice in the exam. This is because they often do not know what is expected of them are not familiar with the type of questions they will be asked. This book has been written with a view to tackling this problem. It provides exam practice for the Junior Certificate in each of the three sections of the French exam: reading comprehensions, listening comprehensions and written exercises. How this book will help you This book is divided into 20 chapters, each with a different and progressively more difficult topic. Each chapter is divided into three sections, each with its own symbol. JJJe lis This section begins with a vocabulary section which lists the most important words and phrases for the topic. You need to learn these words as they will frequently appear in the exam and you will also need to be familiar with them before attempting the other sections. There then follows a wide range of reading comprehensions and a variety of imaginative exercises based on the exam layout. JJJJ’écoute Listening comprehension is worth 43% in the Junior Certificate exam at both Higher and Ordinary Levels. Therefore it is important that students get a lot of practice listening to authentic material and answering a variety of exam-type questions. indicates where a track appears on the Student’s CD. indicates where a track appears on the Teacher’s CD for use in the classroom. The script for the Teacher’s CD is available online at gillmacmillan.ie. V J’ÉCOUTE, JE LIS, J’ÉCRIS ! JJ’écris The final section of each chapter provides you with lots of examples of the type of written questions you will be asked in the exam: informal letters, formal letters, postcards, notes and messages. Exam Focus Throughout the book you will see Exam Focus boxes. These give guidance on what topics are most frequently asked in the exam and how best you can improve your marks. Now Test Yourself Each chapter finishes with a Now Test Yourself exercise. These will help you see how well you know the key language of that topic and check how you are progressing. Solutions for Now Test Yourself exercises are available for students at gillmacmillan.ie.
