PREFACE.
In publishing the first two parts of theDictionary bythe lateProf.Dr.J.J.
Hofpmaw, I think it desirable, to mention why my name has been associated
with it, and to explain the way iu wluch I have understood my task described
on the title-page.
For this purpose, Ishall begin by quotingafewpassagesfromProf. Dr.Kern's
notice of the »Lne of J. J. Hoffmann, which appeared in the Annual of the
Royal Academy of Sciences (Amsterdam) for 1878.
»To lay the foundations of the study as firmly as possible, Hoflfmana has
>laboured for many years with unwearied diligence. Concerning the way in
>which he had compiled a dictionary forprivateuse, wegatheraorae particulars
•from a letter addressed by him to StanilasJulienon 27th May, 1843. They are,
>in chief, the following. As a basisofhis Dictionary he used the JapaneseThe-

»order1). To supplement the words which were wanting, and to explain

The political events, which in 1854 took place in Japan, gave rise to a

people cherished the hope, that it would lead to commercial relations ofgreater
importance, than hadeverbeforebeeneutcrtaine<lbymeansofourfactoryatDecima.
It was therefore, iu 1856, that the Goveniinent urged upon Dr.Hoffmann,
the publicatiou of some means for ilic acquisition of a knowledge of the Ja-
panese language, aud of a Dictionary first of all.
In the course of lloflinaun's studies, and particularly during the sojourn of
the first Japanese Enib;issy in this country in 1861, tlie store of his lexico-
graphic materials hiid been gradually increasing, and the Dictionary wished for

mamt's idea hail constantly been, as he himselfexpressed it, »that, as an intro-

Certainly he at first had not imagined that such a grammar would acquire di-
mensions so great, that the publication of it couldbe completed no earlierthan
1867; and as a natural consequence the elaboration of the Dictionary had to
he postponed till after that date.
I now proceed with the quotation.

»owu dictionury. Tlie natural cousequeuce was sdme loss of time, but it
»would not liecossanly have caused a delay of years in the publication. The
»chief reason of this was an iucreasinglv precarious state of health.
•Quite strong and energetic did HofiPmann scarcely ever feel, during the
»last ten years of his life.
»Towards tlie end of 1875, such progress had been made with the Dic-
tionary ihiit it wns ready i'or the press. The continual decline of the
