Japanese art RAYMOND JOHNES A MORE THAN SIXTY WORKS OF ART IN FULL COLOUR SPRING ART BOOKS JAPANESE ART a recent years the art of Japan has iceived more attention and investiga- on by Westerners than perhaps any ther Eastern art. The reasons are not ard to determine, for even the most ncient of Japanese forms have re- lined their freshness, inventiveness and olour; there is an immaculate clarity iherent in Japanese art which appeals D the Western eye; and finally it is ssentially the Japanese approach to art - as something which should express — he pleasures of the physical world I'hich makes such an impact on us. The freshness and vivacity ofJapa- lese art is what this volume will succeed nconveyingto the reader.The48colour eproductions, touching on all the me- lia in which the Japanese have ex- — :elled sculpture, painting, metal- vork, lacquer, textiles, ceramics and :olour prints — have been made from lewly taken photographs. The most beautiful as well as the most representa- live objects have been chosen, with special emphasis on the superb and unique pieces which are to be found in the temples and museums ofJapan, and which are indispensable to an apprecia- tion of Japanese art. The author. Captain Raymond Johnes, the well-known collector and author, has selected the colour plates, contributed an introduction which is a clear and perceptive background to the subject, and written a short introduction toeach ofthe forms covered inthecolour illustrations, tracing their origin and development.
