JAMES MCCORMICK HIS ANCESTRY AND DESCENDANTS 1570 to 1991 ^tm ^ttP^Kt-i*^ By Edythe T. Kahn BOSTON PUBLIC UBRARY JANES MCCORMICK HIS ANCESTRY AND DESCENDANTS 1570 to 1991 By Edythe T. Kahn Edythe T. Kahn 12710 N. Lakeshore LaSalle, MI 48145 MCCORMICK McCormick emerged in modern times from the Scotch name MacCormalg as well as from the Irish clan McCormalc. In each country the clan founder was a brave battle leader called Cormaic, meaning "Charioteer" (Driver of a war chariot.) The clan shield is red, embla- zoned with three red spots between three silver daggers, all on a chevron. The clan Motto Sines Gimore, translates as "without fear." They wrote a McCormick family history entitled The McCormick Family Story pub. 1978 in which they referred to their , own recollections as well as to historians of an earl- ier time. According to tradition, this McCormick branch is of Scot-Irish ancestry. Their people having first lived in Scotland/ then for a number of years in the north of Ireland, finally coming to America in 1734. Some evidence exists that early McCormicks lived on the Island of Mull, a forbidding spot of land on the bleak coast of Scotland. A map shows this island to be directly north of Ireland. Thus a boat trip from this area to the Province of Ulster, area of Antrim, Nor- thern Ireland, where the McCormicks lived for at least three generations would be no hardship. In Scotland, the McCormicks are a sept of the clain Maclain of Lockbuie. They are eligible to wear the Mac- lain clan crest badge and the Maclain tartan. The great Scottish clans contain septs. They bear a different surname but are descended from the chief through the female line. The early McCormicks lived in a period of great re- ligious unrest, clan wars, and failure of crops. It is most likely that a combination of these events caused them to move to the north part of Ireland, now desig- nated Northern Ireland. HUGH MCCORMICK, born in 1570, is the first McCormick of record. The move to Northern Ireland had been made earlier, as Hugh lived in the Province of Ulster, area /ii of Antrim, in a little community with the Scotts names of Dunmakeleter Hugh was the father of Thomas and the , grandfather of James. THOMAS MCCOEMICK, son of Hugh McCormick, lived in the Province of Ulster, area of Antrim, in the north part of Ireland. *** JAMES MCCORMICK, son of Thomas, was a captain and sturdy fighter, who made a name for himself in the Seige of Londonderry, Northern Ireland. Londonderry was a stronghold of Protestantism against James II, who tried to restore Catholicism in England. James II was defeated, then William and IVfery took the throne. Shortly after the the famous siege, on July 29, 1689, James Mcormick was one of the signers of "The Humble Address of the Governor, Officers, Clergy, and other gentleman in the city and garrison of London- derry" to William and Mary. It is said that no genealogy has ever been written which was free from error and this probably applies to this one. Every effort has been made to record names and dates that were given us, and any errors that may occur are regretable and but the product of an over- sight along the way.
