These standards are voluntary reference standards used by organizations to formalize,systematizeandlegitimizeaverydiversesetofmanagerialactivitiesand tasks (Boiral and Heras-Saizarbitoria, 2015). The standards have been adopted by an increasing number of organizations across the world. They encompass a very widerangeofaspectsofbusinessactivity,includingqualitymanagement(e.g.ISO 9001),environmentalmanagement(e.g.ISO14001),thepreventionofoccupational hazards and the provision of health and safety regulations in the workplace (e.g. OHSAS 18000, ISO 45001) and corporate social responsibility (e.g. SA8000). This monograph, that has been promoted by the Research Network on ManagementStandards(RMS),aimstomakeasubstantivecontributiontothefield of Management System Standards. Chapter“ThreeDecadesofDisseminationofISO9001andTwoofISO14001: Looking Back and Ahead” contains a general overview and a descriptive analysis of the dissemination of the two main global management system standards or meta-standards—ISO 14001 and ISO 9001—on an international level. Chapter“WhatDrivestheQualityofCertifiableManagementSystemStandards Implementation? Insights from the ISO 9001 Standard” sheds light on the drivers relatedtolow,mediumandaboveaverageadoptionoftheISO9001standard,using a novel dataset of 201 Greek firms that are ISO 9001 certified. Chapter “ISO 14001 Adoption and Environmental Performance: The Case of ManufacturinginSweden”analyzestheadoptionoftheISO14001standard.Among other issues it analyzes the impact of ISO 14001 on concrete environmental per- formance,basedonempiricalworkcarriedoutwithSwedishmanufacturingfirms. Chapter“ImplementingtheISO50001System:ACriticalReview”analyzesthe relevanceofthe ISO 50001standardfor reducingenergy consumption,based ona review of the existing literature, and identifies its limitations, advantages and possible weaknesses. Chapter“ConflictsArisingintheGenerationProcessoftheISO45001Standard” shedslightontheprocessinvolvedingeneratingtheISO45001standardinthefield of Occupational Health and Safety. Finally,Chapter“ASupplyChainViewonCertificationStandards:DoesSupply Chain Certification Improve Performance Outcomes?” examines the perceived performance implications of ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and OHSAS 18001 at the supply chain level.
