We praise Him and seek His assistance and forgiveness. We seek refuge in Allah from the evils of ourselves and the wickedness of our own deeds. Whomever Allah guides cannot be led astray, and whomever He leaves astray, none can guide him. I bear witness that no deity is worthy of worship except Allah. And I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and messenger. •$! <5^ '<5)11iyST l_£i; yii 4k > * % ) } £ 4 (©) yj'j <^0 You who believe! Fear your Lord who created you from a single soul, created out of it his mate, and from them both He scattered (like seeds) countless men and women. Fear Allah, through whom you demand your mutual (rights), and be heedful of the wombs. He will amend for you your deeds and forgive you your sins. And whoever obeys Allah and His messenger will certainly be very successful. ^ 3 Verily, anyone who ponders the legal precedents of Allah (in the universe), discovers that they occur century upon century, generation after generation. This has been made so for the believer to learn lessons and achieve admonitions. Verily, the fortunate one is he who learns from the errors of others. Allah declared some people non-believers as a result of vain talks that signified mocking and disdaining of the signs of Allah and His messenger 5^), and for taking the believers as objects of ridicule. 2 Surah An-Nisa: 1 3 Surah al-Ahzaab: 70-71 6 Islamic Verdicts Regarding Those Who Mock Islam and its Followers ❖ Let’s have a look at what Ibn Khathir says about one who ridicules — in his explication of the verse of Surah At-Tawbah [65-66] where Allah says: ^ -* £ £ ^ © 4JLL)! * j 4jjL 1 ^3 4j3_jLL? Say, “Is it Allah, His verses and His messenger that you were mocking?” Make no excuse; you have rejected faith after your belief. If We pardon one faction of you, We will punish another faction because they were criminals. V Ibn Kathir (May Allah has mercy on him) comments on this verse as follows: "Abu Mashar reported that a man among the hypocrites said: these our so-called saints are not less gluttonous, fallacious and cowardly them we do, during confrontation {with the enemies). When this statement reached to the messenger of Allah the man who had uttered it came on his camel pleading: “O messenger of Allah, we were only conversing and jolting*. Thereupon the messenger of Allah replied: £-4SLLj l Ail Lj 1 4 Surah At-Thawbah: 65-66 7 Islamic Verdicts Regarding Those Who Mock Islam and its Followers ♦ “Is it Allah, His verses and His messenger that you were mocking...” ^>5 until the end of the above quoted verses.” This was the reaction of the Holy Prophet towards him, despite the fact that the man’s feet were covered in dust as he had clung to the rein of the prophet’s camel pleading earnestly, but that could not avail. Abdullah Bin Wahb also reported on the authority of Abdullah bin Umar ('fesSfe*) that during a gathering in the battle of Tabuk a man uttered: "I have never seen people li/{e these our so-called saints. They can be very gluttonous, deceptive and cowardly during confrontation (with the enemies). A person among those who were present replied him: “You have lied and you are a hypocrite. I shall inform the messenger of Allah of your words”. When news of this incidence reached the messenger of Allah, the previous verses were revealed. Abdullah Bin Umar added: “Verily, I have seen him (i.e. the man) clung to the nose rope of the prophet's camel pleading, not even minding the wounds his feet were sustaining while in that situation and was saying: “0 messenger of Allah l “We were only conversing and jesting” and the messenger of Allah was replying him: “Is it Allah, His verses and His messenger that you were mocking? Is there no similarity between them? One may say: “I only mean to hurt his person and not because he is adherent to the teachings of Islam! The reply is: Why don’t you make such jokes with those who are disobedient to the messenger of Allah There stands no need for citing instances from such kinds of people, for they are well known. We must fear Allah and observe our duty to Him. Allah can subject you to a life of misery in this world and the hereafter as a result of single bad word that you have uttered. It is recorded in Sahih Al-Bukhari on the authority of Abu Hurairah that the Prophet said: “A man may utter a word displeasing to Allah without considering it to be of any importance, but it will be the reason for landing him into Hell”. 7 Abu Hurairah also reported that the Messenger of Allah eSg§$) said: 7 Narrated by Al-Bukhari 9
