Dawat-e-Islami’s Majlis-e-Tarājim, a department responsible for reproducing the books and booklets of Amīr-e-Aĥl-e-Sunnat founder of Dawat-e-Islami Shaykh ‘Allāmaĥ Maulānā Abu Bilal Muhammad Ilyas Attar Qadiri Razavi ﻪ ْ ـَﻴ ـِﻟ ﺎـﻌَ ْـﻟ ا ﻢُ ـﻬ ُـﺗ ُﺎـﻛ َ ﺮَـ َﺑ  ﺖْ ـﻣ َاَد into various languages of the world, is pleased to present the book ‘Ādāb-e-Ṭa’ām’ in English under the title of ‘Islamic Manners of Eating.’ Although any translation is inevitably a form of interpretation, we have tried our level best to convey the thoughts of the author in its true sense. To facilitate the pronunciation of Arabic letters, a transliteration chart has been added. Terms of Islamic Jurisprudence have not been translated as a caution because in most cases, an English word cannot be a fully juristic substitute. However, a glossary has been given at the end of the book, elaborating the Islamic terms. Further, the index and the bibliography have also been added. For the citations of the various sources, the APA citation style has been used. The “pp.” and “p.” in the citation stand for the page number and “vol.” stands for volume. This translation has been accomplished by the grace of Allah Almighty ﻞَّﺟَ وَﺰَّ ﻋَ , by the favour of His Noble Prophet ﻢَّﻠـﺳ َوَ ﻪٖـِﻟ ٰاوَ ﻪِْﻴَﻠـﻋ َ  ﱃٰﺎَﻌـَﺗ  ﻪُـ(cid:14)ﻠ ـﻟا %َّـ ﺻ َ and the spiritual support of our great Shaykh, the founder of Dawat-e-Islami, ‘Allāmaĥ Maulānā Abu Bilal Muhammad Ilyas Attar Qadiri Razavi ﻪ ْ ـَﻴ ـِﻟ ﺎـَﻌ ْـﻟ ا ﻢ ُ ـﻬ ُـﺗ ُﺎـﻛ َ ﺮَـ َﺑ  ﺖْ ـﻣ َاَد. You would perhaps realize that you were unaware of the manners of eating. Hence, whosoever, until the Day of Judgment, recites Ṣalāt upon me, [the angel] presents that person’s name along with his father’s name to me. The angel says, ‘The so-and-so son of the so-and-so person has recited Ṣalāt upon you.’ (Majma'-uz-Zavāid, pp. 251, vol. 10, Ḥadiš 17291) ٰ ْ ٰ ٰ ۡ ۡ ﺪﻤ(cid:7)(cid:16) ﺤ(cid:7) ﻣ(cid:15) (cid:12)ﻋ(cid:7) (cid:23)ﺎﻌ(cid:7) (cid:7)ﺗ ﻪ(cid:15) ـﻠ(cid:16) ـﻟا (cid:12)(cid:7)(cid:16) ﺻ(cid:7) ﺐﻴﺒ(cid:5) ﺤ(cid:7) ﻟا (cid:12)(cid:7) ﻋ(cid:7) اﻮ(cid:15)ﻠ(cid:16) ﺻ(cid:7) ﻞَّﺟَوَﺰَّﻋَ ﻪ(cid:6)(cid:14)ﻠ(cid:6)ﻟا ﻦَ ـﺤٰ ْﺒـﺳُ! I would like to draw your attention to a noteworthy and faith-refreshing word of wisdom regarding the foregoing Ḥadīš. 1 Islamic Manners of Eating The angel stationed at the glorious grave of the Holy Prophet ﻢَّﻠﺳَوَ ﻪِٖﻟٰاوَ ﻪِ ْﻴَﻠَﻋ ﱃٰﺎَﻌَﺗ ُﷲا %َّﺻَ has been granted such enormous hearing power that he can simultaneously hear the low voice of Ṣalāt-recitation of millions of Muslims around the globe and he has also been granted ‘Ilm-ul-Ghayb as he is aware of the name of the reciter and that of the reciter’s father. If this is the amazing state of the hearing faculty and the ‘Ilm-ul-Ghayb of the angel who is just a servant of the court of the Holy Prophet ﻢَّﻠﺳَوَ ﻪِٖﻟٰاوَ ﻪِ ْﻴَﻠَﻋ ﱃٰﺎَﻌَﺗ ُﷲا %َّﺻَ ; what will be the degree of the powers and ‘Ilm-ul-Ghayb of the Noble Prophet ﻢَّﻠﺳَوَ ﻪِٖﻟٰاوَ ﻪِ ْﻴَﻠَﻋ ﱃٰﺎَﻌَﺗ ُﷲا %َّﺻَ himself! Why would then he ﻢَّﻠﺳَوَ ﻪِٖﻟٰاوَ ﻪِ ْﻴَﻠَﻋ ﱃٰﺎَﻌَﺗ ُﷲا %َّﺻَ not recognize his devotees, listen to their pleas and help them, with the permission of Allah ﻞَّ ﺟَ وَﺰَّ ﻋَ ! Food is a great divine favour with many different flavours and tastes for us. It is an act of reward to eat Ḥalāl food with good intentions conforming to Sharī’aĥ and Sunnaĥ. On the other hand, eating مﻼَ ﺴَّ ﻟا ﺎ ﻤَ ﻬِْﻴـَﻠ ـﻋ َ is such a Sunnaĥ which has been practiced by every Prophet م ﻼَ ـﺴَّ ـﻟا ﻪِ ـْﻴَﻠـﻋَ from Sayyidunā Ādam Ṣafīyullāĥ م ﻼَ ـﺴَّ ـﻟا ﻪِ ـْﻴَﻠـﻋَ to Sayyidunā Muhammad-ur-Rasūlullāĥ ﻢَّﻠﺳَوَ ﻪِٖﻟٰاوَ ﻪِ ْﻴَﻠَﻋ ﱃٰﺎَﻌَﺗ ُﷲا %َّﺻَ .
