The idea behind the series is to 3 approach the IJP’s intellectual resource from a variety of perspec- 4 tives in order to highlight important domains of psychoanalytic 5 enquiry. It is hoped that these volumes will be of interest to psy- 6 choanalysts, students of the discipline and, in particular, to those 7 who work and write from an interdisciplinary standpoint. The 8 ways in which the papers in the monographs are grouped will vary: 9 for example, a number of “themed” monographs will take as their 30 subject important psychoanalytic topics, while others will stress 1 interdisciplinary links (between neuroscience, anthropology, phil- 2 osophy etc., and psychoanalysis). Still others will contain review 3 essays on, for example, film and psychoanalysis, art and psycho- 4 analysis and the worldwide IJP Internet Discussion Group, which 5 debates important papers before they appear in the printed journal 6 (cf. www.ijpa.org). The aim of all the monographs is to provide the 7 reader with a substantive contribution of the highest quality that 8 reflects the principal concerns of contemporary psychoanalysts and 911 those with whom they are in dialogue. This latest volume within vii Junkers/prelims correx 4/20/06 10:34 PM Page viii viii SERIES PREFACE 111 the “Key Papers” series identifies, reproduces, and discusses the 2 most influential psychoanalytic papers produced in each decade 3 since the IJP began. By “influential” we mean papers that not only 4 made an important individual contribution to psychoanalytic 5 knowledge at the time, but also went on to influence the develop- 6 ment of psychoanalytic thinking and concepts. The objective of this 7 and future volumes in the “decades” collection will be to provide 8 an overview of the development of psychoanalysis, as articulated 9 through its principal scholarly journal. 10 We hope you will find this and all the “Key Papers” mono- 1 graphs rewarding and pleasurable to read. 2 3 Paul Williams and Glen O.
