FOREWORD 0.1 ThisIndianStandardwas adopted by theIndianStandardsInstitution on 28 January 1974, after the draft finalized by the Documentation Sectional Committee had been approved by the Executive Committee. 0.2 The catalogue card is intended for storing bibliographical information for the purposeofretrieval ofdocuments when needed. 0.3 As the card is used frequently for reference it should have: (a) a suitable fibre content with sufficient strength; (b) a smooth surface for typing and writing, with good erasing quality; (c) precision cut edges without curl; and (d) uniform size without spots and free from imperfections. 0.4 There is a need for standardization of the attributes of the card given in 0.3 which will facilitate production of cards by manufacturers al well as procurement by libraries and other users, 0.5 This standard contains clause 3.4 which permits the purchaser to obtaineither plain or ruled cards. 0.6 In the formulation ofthis standard due weightage has been given to international co-ordination amongthe standards and practices prevailing in different countries in addition to relating it to the practices in the field in this country. Unit edStatesofAmericaStandards Institute. 3 .1.'150-117" 0.7 For the required data the Forest Research Institute, Debra Dun carried out the various tests on the catalogue cards manufactured in India. 0.8 For the purpose ofdeciding whether a particular requirementof this standard is complied with, the final value, observed or calculated, expressing the result of a test or analysis, shall be rounded off in accordance with IS:2·1960·. The number of significantplaces retained in the rounded off value should be the same as that of the specified value in this standard. 1. SCOPE 1.1 This standard covers the requirements and the methods of sampling and testing for the library catalogue card used for cataloguing of publications and abstract card used for bibliographical description documents, etc. 1.1.1 Therequirements for library cataJogue card and abstract card arethe lameexcept for theirdimensions. 2. GRADES 2.1 There shallbe two grades ofcataloguecards, namely, Grade 1 and Grade2 as given in Table I. 2.2 Grade 1 Catalogue card. may be used in libraries where the frequency of handling is more and in other cases Grade2 cardsmay be used. 3." REQ,UIREMBNTS 3.1 Dlme••lo••- The sizesofthe card shall be the following: a) A7 (74 X 105mm) (SII Fig. 1), b) International Library Catalogue Card (75)( 125mm) (SI' Fig. 2), and c) A6 (105 x 148mm) (s" Fig. 3). 3.1.1 Besides the International Library Catalogue C~rd, card of A7 sizecan also be used Cor library purposes. For preparationof abstracts, cardof A6size may be used exclusively. 3.1.2 Tolnane,-The tolerance on leqtb aDd width shall be d:lmm. -Rul.tarrouftdiAIoft"Dumericalva lu...(nWI~)• III7150-ll7t 3.2 CarelStock- The card shall be ofuniform formation thickness and substance, evenly finished and free from specks or other blemishes. The card should have a smooth but non-glossy surface. It shall be suitable for ruling, typing, printing and writing with ink. It should have a good erasingquality. 3.3 Colour-The colour of the card should preferably be cream-white unless otherwise specified. 3.4 Llae.-The cards should be plain or ruled as required by the purchaser and the distance between the lines should be 8 DUD. 3....1 Ruling commonly used on card is shown in Fig. 4. 3.5 PaaehHole- The hole shall be punched, if required, on the card and shall be at the centreofthe long dimension. The centreofthe hole shall be8 mm from the bottomedge. The diameter of the holeshall be 8mm. 3.6 The card shall also comply with the requirements given in Table when tested in accordance with the relevant test methods.
