This standard does not purport to address all of the safety problems, if any. associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the userto establish appropriate safety and health practices and to ensurecompliance with any national regulatory conditions. 1 Scope This International Standard specihes a pass/tail method for the determination of the resistance of rubber- or plastics-coated tabncs to water penetration (hydrostatic resistance) when subjected to a spcc.t.c hydrostatic pressure over afixed period of time Two test specimen shapes are given one iscircular, the othersquare 2 Normative references The following normative documents contamprovistons which, through reference Intrus text, constitute provisrons at this International Standard. For dated references, subsequent amendments to. or revisions of, any of these publications do not apply However. parties to agreements based on trusInternational Standard are encouraged to mvestiqate the POSSibility of applying the most recent editions of the normative documents Indicated below. For undated references. the latest edition of the normative document referred to applies. Members of ISO and lEG maintain registers of currently valid International Standards. ISO 2231:1989,Rubber-or plastics-coatedisbncs - Standardatmospheres forconaiuorunqandtestmg ISO 2286-1:1998. Rubber- or plastics-coatedtsbrtcs - Oetermmsuon of roll cnsrectenstcs - Part': MethodS for detenninstion of length, Widthandnetmass 3 Principle A test specimen of coated labric is subjected to an increasing pressure of water on one face. under standard conditions. until a predetermined pressure specitied in the coated-fabric specification IS obtained. The reqUired pressure is maintainedfor a specified time oruntil penetration occurs. whICheveris the sooner. 4 Apparatus 4.1 General The apparatus shall consist of an open-mouthed vessel fined Witha ctamp to fasten the test specimen over the mouth. The lowerpart of the vessel shall have a nozzle allowing itto be connected to a water inlet pipe to fill It With water at room temperature. A retaining mesh is fitted over the test specimen. This mesh shall comprise wires of 1mmto 1,2mm diameterforming squares of side not greaterthan 30 mm. 1 IS 7016 (Part 7) : 2009 ISO 1420: 2001 4.2 Means of measuring water pressure Either a manometer, connected to the test head, allowing water pressures up to 19,6kPa (200 cmH to be read 20) to an accuracy of t 1%, or a pressure gauge. graduated in centimetres head of water or in kilopascals and with a maximum reading of at least 100 kPa (946cmH 0), shall be used to measure the water pressure applied to the 2 test specimen. 4.3 Test area The open mouth of the vessel (see 4.1) over which the test specimen is clamped shall be eithera square of side 100mm or a circle of orarneter 113mm,gIVing an area of 100cm2 in each case. If necessary, soft rubber sealing gaskets can be employed between the coated-fabric test specimen and the surlaces of the clamps in order 10 reduce Ihe nsk of damagetothe test specimen byIhe clamps, and tofacilitate the testing of seams. In this respect, rubber having a hardness of approximately 40IRHD (Intemational Rubber Hardness Degrees) and approximately 0,5cm thick or 1emIndiameter has been found useful. Alternatively, aclosed-cell,crosslinked-polyethylene foam having a density of 45 kg/m3to 55 kg/m3and approximately1cm thick can also beused. 5 Test specimens 5.1 Taking teat specimens Take test specimens from anarea with nofunctional orvisible defects and located inthe usable width of the coated fabric as defined in ISO2286-1. 5.2 Number Unlessotherwisespecifiedinthe material specification, test five specimens ineach series of tests. 5.3 Shape and cfimenaiona 5.3.1 Square apec:1mena Each specimenshall be square withsides measuring approximately200 mm. 5.3.2 Circularapec:i~ Each soecirnen shall have adiameterof 130mm10200mm. 5.4 Conditioning Immediafelypriorto testing.condition the specimens for at least 16h in an appropriate atmosphere in accordance WIthISO 2231. 6 Procedure 6.1 Test method With the vessel connected 10Ihe waler Inlet pipe. open the inlet valve and allow the water to run into Ihe vessel until ,t overflows Check that the topof Ihe vesselIS horizontal by ensuring that Ihe water is uniformly flush with all edges.Ensure thai the Inlel pIpe IStotallypurged ofair, and also that the level of w I rn th I nd I lhe zero on the manometer tube ae , e vesse correspo 5 0 or pressure gauge (see 4.2). Place Ihe lest specimen on the vessel with the face 10 be tested (rnoistened pnortothe test) oncontact wilh the water witho t I " . . u rapping any air underthetest specimen. 2 IS 1016(Part 7) : 2009 ISO 1420: 2001 Fit the retaining mesh (see 41 ) Secure the test specimen and the mesh f,rmly on the vessel uSing the clamp, takingcare to ensure that the edges of the clamp are completelyparalletwith those ofthe vessel 6.2 Application of pressure Open the inlet varvesothat the pressure in the vessel gradually Increases at the requrred rate (pressures less than or equal to 30 kPa shall be attained in 1min ~_ 10 s: pressures of more than 30kPa shall be attained In 2min ±20 s). Venfy the pressure. Once the required pressure has been reached, adjust the inlet valve. if necessary. and maintain the pressure for the required time (pressures less than or equal to 30kPa shall be maintained for 2min:pressures of more than 30kPa snail be maintained for 5min).The test duration WIll therefore be 3min in the former case and 7min in the latter. Then Inspect the visible part of the test specimen In order to detect whether any water droplets have passed through the coated tabnc. Close the water inlet valve and return the pressure to zero by opening the evacuation valve. If a leak IS detected in the test specimen clamping zone during the test, begin again. 7 Expression ofresults The visible face of the coated fabric shall not have any "water penetrationpoints", nor any trace of moisture. on any of the five test specimens.A"water penetration point" isconsideredto be any spot in whIChadrop appears as a pin prick. Penetration occurring exactly on the edges of the clamp shall not be considered to be a ·water penetrahon point". 8 Test report The test report shall include the following: a) a reference to this International Standard; b) adescriptionof thecoated fabric tested; c) the conditioning and test atmosphere used; d) the numberof test specimenstested; e) whetherthe test specimenswere square orcircular; f) which side(s) of thecoated fabric were subjected to water pressure; g) the pressureand the time the pressure wasapplied; h) whetherthe coatedfabric passedor failed the test; i) detailsof any deviationsfrom the standardtest procedure; j) thedate of the test. 3 Bureau of Indian Standards SIS ISa statutory msutunon estaonsneo unoer tne Bureau of Indian Sumoeros Act 1986 to p'<:"'.« ' narrnornous development of the activities of standardization. markinq and quanty cert.trcanon ',t goods and attending to connected matters In the country Copyright SIS has the copyright ot all Its publications No part of the these ouor.canons may be reproduced In any form without the prior permission In writing ot SIS Trus does not preclude tne free use. in the course ofImplementing the standard, ofnecessary details.such as symbols and sizes.type or grade desrqnatrons [ nqUifies relating to copyfight be addressed to the Drrector (Publications). 81S.
