PCD 18 FOREWORD This Indian Standard (Third Revision) wasadopted bythe Bureau of Indian Standards, after thedrafi finalizedby the Natural andSyntheticFragrance Materials SectionalCommitteehadbeenapproved bythePetroleum, CoalandRelated ProductsDivision Council. Thisstandardwasfirstissued in1954andsubsequentlyrevised in 1973and 1998.TheCommittee notedthatevenafter removal of one or more of its constituents, the product was found to be still conforming to the specification which necessitated the first revision. In the second revision, only asingle grade of gum spirit of turpentine, with minimum limitsforthemajor constituents, that is,alpha-pinene andcar-3-ene,wasspecified toensure coverage ofthewholeoil tothisspecification. Inthis revision, physico-chemical requirements havebeenprescribed at20°Cinaddition to27°C. Besides, requirement for acid value hasbeen madestringent anddistillation range has been modified. Thewholeoilofturpentine finds applications inthemanufacture ofpharmaceuticals, perfumery andother chemicals. Itsuse inpaint industry isbeing taken qpbyturpentine fromwhich one or more constituents are removed. The latter materialiscoveredbyIS6646:1972’ Specification foroilofturpentine, solventgrade’. An1S0 11020:1998 ‘Oilofturpentine, Iberiantype(Pinuspinaster Sol,]’ existwhichistechnicallynotequivalenttothis standard.
