This standard wasfirstpublished in 1962and itsfirstrevisionwastakenupin 1972after.incorpcmting following changes: a) Minimum values of hardness were specified, b) Tolerance limits were modified, and c) Sampling plans were also modified. While second revision was taken up in 1985, this standard was split up as: IS 1931Spec~lcation forfiles: Part 1 Technical supply conditions Part 2 Engineer’s tiles Part 3 Sawfiles Part 4 Millfiles Part 5 Special purpose files In this revision, the followlng changes havebeen made: a) The endurance tcst rcquirements havebeen limited tobastard cut ofengineer’s files only. The number of strokes for stock removal has been reduced to minimize the time taken for testing the files for endurance test, b) Dimensions of hand profcr have been incorporated for guidanceonly, c) Figure showing the usc of hand prover has also been included, and d) Micro hardness testing has b een made as a type test. While revising this standard, all the five parts havebeen combined into a single comprehensive standard. The fileswhich arc indicated in (l\cTables,1,2,4,9, 10and 14arewideIyusedfor forestry work, The nccdlc tiles havebeencovcrcd inIS 3152:1980 ‘Specificationfor needlefiles(fir.r[ revision)’ and the rasps have been covered in IS 3587: 1985 ‘Specification for rasps (second revision)’. While preparing this standard, considerable assistance hasbeen derived from the following standards: 1S0 234/1 : 1983 Files and rasps — Part 1 :Dimensions 1S0234/2 : 1982 Filesand rasps— Part2: Characteristics ofcutissuedbytheInternational Organization for Standardization (1S0) BS498 : 1990 Specification for rasps and engineers’ files issuedbythe British Standards Institution (UK) For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this standard is complied with, the final value, observed or calculated, expressing the result of a test, shall be rounded off in accordance with 1S 2 : 1960 ‘Rules for rounding off numerical values (revised)’. The number of significant places retained in [he rounded off value should bc lhc same as that of the specified value in this standard.
