The environmental impact ofleather processing hasbeen amatter ofconcern among theusersaswell asinthe leather manufacturers. With the growing awareness of environmental aspects, the concept of environment- .—-— friendly leather isbecoming more andmore popular. Keeping in view the above, the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India haa &cided to include finished leather under theECO MrukScheme. Sofar,quality parameters asper Indian Standards have been an inherent part ofthe ECO Mark criteria. Incaaeofleather ithas been felt tha4 since tMsisaproducq which istraded internationally toalmge extent, conformance toIndian Standard may not berelevant most of the time, asin suchcases, finished leather ismade asper thebuyersrequirement. Considering this fact, theECO Mark Steering Committee decided tomodify the existing practice andin this standard, conformance tothebuyer’squality requirement hasbeenprescribed tobethrough self-declaration in casethe samedoesn’tcallforconformity totherelevant IndianStandards. Insuchcasesalso,forthepurpose of certification, the Bureau willcertify onlytheconformity toECOcriteria laiddowninthisstandard andnot the quality parameters. There isno 1S0 standard onthe subject.Thk standardhasbeenprepared basedontheGazette Notification No. 58 dated 27 January 2000 issued by theMinis&yofEnvironment and Forests, Government ofIndia. There exists aseparate standard, IS 14816:2000 ‘Leather—Method oftestsforECOcriteria’. The composition of the technicaJ committee responsible for the formulation of this standard is given in Annex B. Forthepurpose ofdeciding whether aparticulm requirement ofthisstandard iscomplied with, thefinal value, observed or calculated, expressing the result of a test or analysis, shall be rounded off in accordance with IS2:1960 ‘Rulesforrounding offnnmerical values (revised)’. Thenumber ofsignificant places retained inthe rounded off value should be the same asthat ofthe specified value inthis standard.
