Mediumdensityfibre boardisapanelproductmanufacturedfrom lignocellulosicfibrescombinedwith synthetic resin or othersuitablebinder. Thepanelsare manufacturedto a specificgravityof0.6 to 0.9 by the application ofheat and pressureby aprocessinwhichthe interfibrebondissubstantiallycreatedbythe addedbinder.Other materials may have been added during manufacturing to improve certain properties. This standardwasfirst publishedin 1988. Thisrevisionisbeingbroughtoutto incorporatemodificationsfound necessary in the present day context. Further, detailed requirements for physical and mechanical properties have been given for various thickness ofboards. Medium density fibre boards are recommended for use in interior dry locations. Grade I boards may be used in Hazard Class 11) and Hazard Class 22), whereas Grade II boards may be used in HazardClass II)only. Informulationofthisstandard, due weightage has beengiven to standardsandpracticesprevailing indifferent countries and also to the climatic conditions and customs inthe country. In this revision properties have been incorporated to facilitate the properapplication ofproduct, properties likemodulus ofelasticityand the values indicating minimum and average have been included. A scheme oflabelling environment friendly products to be known as ECO-Mark has been introduced at the instance ofthe Ministry ofEnvironment and Forests (MEF), Government ofIndia. The ECO-Mark shall be administered by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) under the BIS Act, 1986 as per the Resolution No. 71 dated 21 February 1991 and Resolution No. 425 dated 20 October 1992 published in the Gazette ofthe Government ofIndia. For a product to be eligible for ECO-Mark, itshall also carry the Standard Mark ofthe SIS besides meetingadditional environmentfriendly requirements. Forthis purpose, the Standard MarkofBIS would be a single mark beinga combinationofthe lSI Markand the Eco logo. Requirements to be satisfied for a productto qualify for the BIS Standard Mark for Eco friendliness, will be optional. Manufacturing units will be free to opt for lSI Mark alonealso. The ECO criteria is based on the Gazette Notification No. 170 dated 16 May 1996 for wood substitutes as environment friendly products published in the Gazette ofGovernmentofIndia. The compositionofCommittee responsible for the formulation ofthis standard is given at Annex C. For the purpose ofdecidingwhethera particularrequirementofthis standard is compliedwith, the final value, observed or calculated, expressing the result ofa test or analysis, shall be rounded off in accordance with IS 2 : 1960 'Rulesfor roundingoffnumericalvalues(revised)'.
