H. Pearse” appears that way rather than Pádraig Pearse or Pádraig Anraí Mac Piarais, and “Sean Mac Diarmada” is writ- ten as he wanted it instead of Sean MacDermott. Elsewhere, I try to use the most common or popularly accepted spelling of a name. For example, Seán T. O’Kelly, a close associate of de Valera and his predecessor as president of Ireland, is mentioned in place of Seán T. Ó Ceallaigh. Direct quotations, how- ever, reproduce how a name appears in the quotation cited. ix
