The tables were designed to assist persons who carry out the "joint research program planning, evaluation, and coordination" recommended in the long-range study, A National Program of Research for Agriculture, published in October 1966. Input data is provided to the Current Research Information System (CRIS) by USDA Research Agencies on Forms AD-416, AD-417, and AD-418, and by State Agricultural Experiment Stations and other institutions on Forms AD-416, AD-417, and AD-419 (see Table of Contents). From 1968 through 1981, the Inventory was published in three-volume sets. Publication of Volume I was discontinued in 1982. Volumes II and III were combined into a single volume in 1983. Tables in the II series show scientist years and funds for USDA agencies and SAES et al. Tables in the III series show funding data for USDA research by source of funds. Tables in the IV series show funding data for SAES et al. by source of funds. The ll-B, lll-B, and IV-B Tables show a breakdown of the data by the commodity classification used in the long-range study. The ll-D, lll-D, and IV-D Tables show data for each of the 98 Research Problem Areas (RPA) used in the long-range study. The lll-E and IV-E Tables provide summaries of funds and scientist years by agency or station/institution. Table V shows scientist years by Research Program Group (RPG) and Research Program (RP). RPs and RPGs are made up of unique combinations determined by type of research (agricultural or forestry), activity, commodity, and Research Problem Area (RPA) classification. Starting with Fiscal Year 1993, Inventory Tables V-C & V-B are provided only for National and Regional Summaries. Country/State summaries, included in previous editions of the Inventory, may be requested from the CRIS office. All funds appearing in this volume are gross figures. This means that funds not allocated to specific research projects, but considered to be an integral part of the cost of doing research, are prorated to the appropriate research projects. The nature and amount of funds not allocated to projects vary among the stations and USDA agencies. Non-allocated funds usually include costs for administration, supervision, and personnel and financial services. They may also include publications and statistical services, rent, operation of research farms, and other expenditures that relate to several or all projects. Prior to Fiscal Year 1972, Tables III and IV reflected net funds. Starting with Fiscal Year 1982, all inventory tables include data from cooperating Schools of Veterinary Medicine. Starting with Fiscal Year 1986, funds provided by the Agency for International Development (AID) are included with Other Federal Funds in Series II, III and IV Tables. Funds and staff support for a number of Forestry Schools and Schools of Veterinary Medicine vii
