He also was instrumental in the development of a fire science program at Los Angeles Harbor College and a fire administration program at California State College, Long Beach, and taught at both institutions. Mr. Mahoney has 28 years of active duty in the fire service where he served in many different capacities. He was fire chief of Arcadia, CA, and Garden Grove, CA. Prior to these positions, he served with the Los Angeles Fire Department where he rose to the rank of battalion chief. While at the LAFD, he was also head of the Company Training Unit of the Training Section, and was a task force commander during the famous Watts riots. In addition to careers in firefighting and fire service training and education, Gene Mahoney is a prolific author. He has written a text, Fire Department Hydraulics,as well the first edition of this book. Mr. Ma honey is also the author of many fire training manuals, slide presenta tions, and films, including ones for command officers, junior officers, supervision and management, firefighter promotion examinations, etc. He has the rare distinction of having had a novel published, entitled An Anatomy of an Arsonist. Gene Mahoney holds both Bachelor of Science and Master of Sci ence degrees from the University of Southern California. He served 22 years in the Navy Reserve as a pilot and retired with the rank of Lieuten ant Commander.
