Michael T. Nietzel, PhD, serves as Provost of the University of Kentucky.Dr.Nietzel’sresearchandteachinginterestfocusonforen- sic psychology, jury behavior, origins of criminal behavior, and the evaluation of psychotherapy. He teaches graduate courses in psy- chotherapyandforensicpsychologyandisafrequentconsultantto attorneysandlawenforcement.Nietzelhasassistedinjuryselection for more that 50 death-penalty trials. He has published more than 75 articles, books and book chapters, and is coauthor of various textbooks on clinical psychology, abnormal psychology, and psy- chology and the legal system. RobertWalker,MSW,LCSW,isAssistantProfessorattheUniversity of Kentucky Department of Psychiatry and the Center on Drug and AlcoholResearch,withconjointappointmentsintheCollegeofSocial Work and Department of Behavioral Science. He was director of a communitymentalhealthcenterfor20yearsandhashadanactive forensic mental health practice. He is the project director of Ken- tucky’s substance abuse treatmentoutcome study and co-principal investigatoronaNationalInstituteonAlcoholAbuseandAlcoholism study of alcohol use and health among domestic violence victims. TK Logan, PhD, is an Associate Professor in the Department of BehavioralScienceattheUniversityofKentucky.Dr.Loganhasbeen funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), and has completed studies on intimate partner violence and divorce; intimatepartnerviolenceandcustodyoutcomes;stalkingvictimiza- tionandperpetration;healthandmentalhealthstatus,barriers,and service use among women; HIV risk behavior; and health, mental health, substance use, and victimization among rural and urban women. Althoughno single bookcan offer a definitive statement on how to assess and treat intimate partner violence problems, this manual has the goal of putting the complexities into a manageable and empirically justified clinical practice. We attempt to draw clinicians’ practices into closer agreementwiththeconsensusofexistingresearchandpolicylitera- tures.Wealsodiscussdiverseresearchfindingsandlegalresources with the purpose of improving clinicians’ competence and confi- dence in treating clients for whom intimate partner violence is an issue. COMMON PITFALLS FACED BY MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONALS Research over the past 2 decades has improved our understanding of how intimate partner violence affects mental health for both vic- timsandoffenders.Infact,theassociationsbetweenviolence,mental health, and substance abuse have been shown to be very complex. Mental health problems can increase the risk of violence among offenders and can contribute to greater risk for victims as well. In addition, substance abuse has complex associations with both offender patterns and victimization.
