Welcome to the 51st Congress of ISAE Understanding animal behaviour is the overall theme of this congress and the red thread through the chosen scientific topics. This reflects our wish for focus on what we consider the core of applied ethology. Understanding animal behaviour is essential in order to improve the interaction between animals and the environments in which they are kept and to improve animal welfare. We need to understand how the animals sense and perceive their world beyond the human perspective, which is based almost only on vision. Animal affective states are central for the concept of animal welfare, but to advance our assessment of these states we have to understand animals’ learning and cognitive abilities. The potential, but also pitfalls, of novel methods to study behavioural and physiological stress responses must be addressed continuously. Many of the animals kept by man are social, and we need to understand social behaviour in relation to their welfare, and especially because we rely on social behaviour when animals are group housed. In addition, for many domestic animal species we rely on maternal behaviour for neonatal development and survival. Animal behaviour is a key component in ensuring animal welfare and functionality in extensively and intensively kept animals and ‘applying ethology in the keeping of animals’, thus putting the science to work is by number the largest topic on this congress. We warmly welcome you to Aarhus and hope that you will enjoy the scientific program and discussions as well as the social events and networking. Please, help us to make this congress a memorable event. Margit Bak Jensen, Jens Malmkvist and Mette S.
