We see it as a companion to Southern Africa: The Continuing Crisis, which we have revised and up- dated so as to appear at the same time as this volume. Both of these books are intended for broad audiences in this country and overseas, in the belief that the Southern African region is one of the most critical in the world today. We hope that International Politics in Southern Africa will dispel some of the myths concerning major power involvement in the region and provide a sound basis for evaluating the complexities of international engagement. In preparation for the book, we organized a conference at Indiana University on “Southern Africa: International Issues and Responses,” on April 24 and 25, 1981, for the contributors to the work. We are indebted to The Lilly Endowment, Inc. for supporting the conference and thereby aiding in the publication of the book. The Cummins Engine Foundation, the Dean of International Programs, and the African Studies Program also provided encouragement and generous support. Those who participated in the conference as discussants or chairpersons included: Phyllis Martin, John Lombardi, Trevor Brown, William Siffm, Allen Maxwell, Edmond Keller, J. Gus Lie- benow, Iliya Harik, Sheldon Cellar, and Harvey Starr. The lively in- vn Vlll Preface teraction between contributors and commentators at the conference was an invaluable stimulus to the revision of the chapters. We very much appreciate the assistance given this entire project by the staff of the African Studies Program, and in particular by Chloe Ann Miller, Sue Ann Hanson, Susan Domowitz, and Lisa McCullough.
