Ambedkar’s demand for annihilation of caste in the essay ‘Annihilation of Caste’ reminds us of his unforgettable experiences in the Hindu Society. His writings, speeches and arguments are still unpalatable and incendiary to the Hindus because of his commitment to Dalit upliftment and revolutionary thoughts about caste system and the struggle for social justice and Dalit identity. Ambedkar’s controversial debates with Gandhi present intellectual views on Caste system and Dalit identity. Ambedkar’s social criticism and logical analysis is documented in his undelivered speech “Annihilation of Caste” as Social Logical Literature, provides a critical analysis of Indian Society. Dr. Ambedkar raised many issues in this essay to show the demerits of Caste system, its inequalities and injustice against Dalit upliftment. Dr. Ambedkar’s undelivered speech “Annihilation of Caste” was prepared as a presidential address for the conference of the Jat-Pat- Todak Mandal (which is an association that breaks caste related barriers) of Lahore in 1936. The Mandal had invited him to deliver the presidential address but after seeing the radical views expressed in the script, the organizers became averse to include the speech in the deliberations of the conference and asked Ambedkar to delete the portions that were offensive to Hindu religion and formed an unnecessary attack on Hindu religious scriptures and practices. When Dr. Ambedkar rejected their appeal for alterations, the Mandal www.ijmer.in 1 INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF MULTIDISCIPLINARY EDUCATIONAL RESEARCH ISSN : 2277-7881; IMPACT FACTOR - 2.972; IC VALUE:5.16; ISI VALUE:2.286 VOLUME 4, ISSUE 7(3), JULY 2015 cancelled the conference. Ambedkar got his speech printed and distributed to all these persons who mattered. This undelivered presidential address generated a great controversy. It was translated into many languages. Ambedkar presented it in English and showed his intellectuality and depth of knowledge over different issues. His use of English language reminds one of his scholarly academic orientations. Dr. Ambedkar says “I do not care for the credit which every progressive society must give its rebels. I shall be satisfied if I make the Hindus realize that they are the sick men of India and that their sickness is causing danger to the health and happiness of other Indians1. I can say that Dr. Ambedkar was a progressive revolutionary writer. He stood boldly and intellectually to face the consequences and challenged the Hindus. He did not bother about the humiliations, name and fame and the rejection of his presidential address. In spite of many bitter experiences, he tried to awaken the Hindus from ignorance and Gandhi’s pacifism. But their orthodox and superstitious religious beliefs could not allow them to accept his radical views. A Vindication of Caste by Gandhi: In his vindication of caste Gandhi himself complimented Ambedkar. He wrote, “The (Jat-Pat-Todak) committee (By cancelling the conference) appears to have deprived the public of listening to the original views of a man, who has carved out for himself a unique position in the society. Whatever label he wears in future, Dr. Ambedkar is not the man to allow himself to be forgotten. No reformer can ignore the address. Dr. Ambedkar is a challenge to Hinduism. The author (of Annihilation of Caste) of the address has quoted chapter and verse in proof of his threefold indictment-inhuman conduct itself, the unabashed justification of it on the part of the perpetrators and the subsequent discovery that the justification was warranted by their scriptures. Dr. Ambedkar is its most uncompromising exponent and www.ijmer.in 2
