Universities around the world are n o C grappling with the question: How can they prepare their graduates e v a for today’s complex, interconnected world? In response, many insti- gr al P tutions are developing study abroad programs to offer their students e - the opportunity to experience another culture and language firsthand. so m Many assume that this will automatically lead to enhanced intercultural Tro understanding and greater proficiency in the host language. But is this et i k e the case? ot bli What does it mean to be an “intercultural speaker” or “mediator” bi s and how can one develop a deeper level of intercultural awareness and sitet sensitivity? Why do some individuals return from study abroad with a ver ni broader, more intercultural, global identity while others reject the host U o environment and cling more tightly to their homeland and localized d t e s identity? Why do some enhance their second language (L2) proficiency en c while others do not? What can account for these different developmen- m - li tal trajectories? co These are some of the questions I have been asking myself in the last ect. n n decade or so. Before I began researching study abroad in 2000, I would o c e hear tales of Hong Kong exchange students who returned home with av gr negative images of the host culture and a seemingly higher level of eth- al p w. nocentricism. By contrast, others would beam with excitement when w w recounting their sojourn experiences and newfound love of travel. With m o enhanced self-confidence, these individuals would seek out opportu- al fr nities to interact across cultures and use their L2 both at home and eri at m abroad. The contrast was startling. ht Intercultural Journeys: From Study to Residence Abroad focuses on the yrig p actual experiences of advanced L2 students who traveled from their o C home environment to a foreign land as part of a faculty-led, short-term study abroad program.1 This book explores the linkage between inter- cultural awareness and sensitivity, language development, and identity reconstruction in young adult L2 learners. ix 10.1057/9780230277083 - Intercultural Journeys, Jane Jackson 99778800223300__552277221188__0011__pprreexxiivv..iinndddd iixx 1111//2200//22000099 33::4488::0077 PPMM
