ArtsIT,InteractivityandGameCreation2018wasmeanttobeaplacewherepeople in the arts, with a keen interest in modern IT technologies, meet with people in IT, havingstrongtiestotheartsintheirworks.Since2009,theeventhasbecomealeading scientific forum for dissemination of cutting-edge research results in the area of arts, design, and technology. The event also reflects the advances seen in the open related topics of interactivity (interaction design, virtual reality, augmented reality, robotics, etc.) and game creation (e.g., serious games, gamification, leisure gaming, gameplay, etc.). ArtsIT has been successfully co-located with the international conference for Design, Learning and Innovation (DLI) since 2016. Design, learning, and innovation frame the world of IT, opening doors into an increasingly playful world. The DLI 2018 conference was driven by the belief that tools, technologies, and environments, as well as content and approaches, can spark and nurture a passion for learning, transforming domains such as education, rehabilitation/therapy, work places, and cultural institutions. Design, learning, and innovation are a powerful catalyst in empowering individuals to participate, commu- nicate, andcreate, wherebytheycanexceedtheirownlimitsinaplayfulway.Making thisspiritexplicitandvisibleiscrucialforidentifyinghowspecifictools, technologies, methodologies and solutions shape opportunities for learning and engaging with the demandsoftoday’sworld.Morethanever, challengesinthefieldsofdesign, learning, and innovation are often approached by transdisciplinary teams and solutions that mobilizetools, technologies, methods, andtheoriesfromdifferentfieldstounlocknew frameworks, openinguptopartnershipsthatcanenrichlearninginformalandinformal learning practices. Following the workshop, the welcome reception took place at Paço do Vitorino (http://www.pacodevitorino.com),aheritagehotellocatedinPontedeLima,oneofthe mostcharacterfulandcharmingtownsinnorthernPortugal.Thehouse, datingbackto the XVI century, is a municipal monument that has undergone an innovative archi- tectural intervention. The rehabilitation of Paço de Vitorino emerged out of the desire to enhance the inherited patrimony, seeking to achieve a balance between recovering domesticmemoriesandensuringitsself-sufficiency.Themanor house hasbeeninthe VI ArtsIT + DLI 2018 samefamilysincethemid-sixteenthcenturyanditshistoryismarkedbyseveralevents that mime and mirror the history of Portugal. Paço de Vitorino impresses the visitor because of the harmonious baroque ensemble that includes the chapel, the battlement wall, the gate, and the expressiveness of the facades entering the yard, richly adorned with elements of dressed granite. The monumental gardens, attributed to the Italian master Nicolau Nasoni, were designed according to the baroque canons and include a sophisticated and unique irrigation system as well as secular camellias. The technical program of the collocated conferences ArtsIT 2018 and DLI 2018 included 40 full papers and five short papers in oral presentation sessions during the main conference’s tracks and 13 poster and demo presentations. Aside from the high-quality technical paper presentations, the technical program also featured three keynote speeches. The three keynote speakers were Prof. Yvonne Rogers from the UniversityCollegeLondon,Assoc.Prof.AnthonyL.Brooks,fromAalborgUniversity, Denmark, and Prof. Anton Nijholt from the University of Twente, The Netherlands. Thetechnicalprogramincludedthreeartsperformancesthatwereheldatthehistorical Theatro Circo, namely, CO:LATERAL, NaN:Collider and ShellShock. CO:LATERAL (Né Barros and João Martinho Moura, with Sónia Cunha/ 2016–2018) CO:LATERAL was developed from the Nuve artwork, a project for performance and digital art. Initially presented in 2010, this solo interpreted by Né Barros was the motif for several national and international publications. In Co:Lateral the body pro- jected and extended itself in a relationship of intimacy with interactive virtual reality. The performative discourse resulting from this connection calls for an extraordinary moment, a poetic moment made of a mixture of realities, made of body, double and images. Co:Lateral evokes moments of the death of the swan immersed in an imma- terial space of light and projection: A phantom of the archive of dance now returns to test itself in a reality of illusory imprisonment. Direction and choreography: Né Barros; Digital creation: João Martinho Moura; Performer: Sónia Cunha; Music: João Martinho Moura; Costume Design: Né Barros; Production: Lucinda Gomes/balleteatro; Research supervision: Paulo Ferreira-Lopes (School of Arts, UCP/CITAR) and Né Barros (Balleteatro). NaN:Collider (António Rafael, João Martinho Moura and Miguel Pedro. 2016–2018) NaN:Collider + Miguel Pedro NaN Collider is an audiovisual performance, started in2016byJoãoMartinhoMouraandAntónioRafael,devotedtothescience,arts,and space exploration. NaN is a numeric data type value representing an undefined or unpresentable value, something impossible to calculate. Collider refers to an opposite concepttothat, somethingveryconcrete, usedasaresearchtoolinparticlephysicsby accelerating particles to very high kinetic energy. (Music: António Rafael, Miguel Pedro, João Martinho Moura; Visuals: João Martinho Moura) ShellShock (Doaa Darwish. 2018) ShellShock is an experimental multimedia performance that explores trauma and PTSD through human movement, by using motion-capture technology to generate audiovisual content in real time. The project aims to explore different approaches to combine digital media with theatre and Performing Arts. ShellShock is developed in the Rhine-Waal University media labs in Kamp-Lintfort (Germany) under the super- vision of Prof. Ido Iurgel.
