This focus on early-stage researchers is immediately observable in the program,featuring a high number of educationalsessions and PhD sessions,whereyoungPhDstudentspresenttheirresearch. AIMS2015–whichtookplaceduringJune22–25,2015,inGhent,Belgium,and was hosted by Ghent University and iMinds – was the ninth edition of a conference series onmanagementand securityaspectsof distributedandautonomoussystems. It followedthealreadyestablishedtraditionofanunusuallyvividandinteractiveconfer- enceseries,aftersuccessfuleventsinBrno,CzechRepublicin2014,Barcelona,Spain in 2013,Luxembourg,Luxembourgin 2012,Nancy,Francein 2011,Zürich,Switzer- landin2010,Enschede,TheNetherlandsin2009,Bremen,Germanyin2008,andOslo, Norwayin2007. Thisyear,AIMS2015focusedonintelligentmechanismsfornetworkconfiguration and security. This theme is addressed in the technical programwith papersrelated to monitoring,security,andmanagementmethodologiesintheapplicationareasofwired andwirelessnetworks,Internet-of-Things,andCloudinfrastructures.AIMS2015was organizedasa4-dayprogramtoencouragetheinteractionwithandtheactiveparticipa- tionoftheconference’saudience.Theprogramconsistedoftechnicalsessionsforthe maintrackandPhDsessions,interleavedwitharesearchandaneducationalkeynoteand threelabsessions. Thelabsessionsofferedhands-onexperienceinnetworkandservicemanagement topics and they were organized in on-site labs preceded by short tutorial-style teach- ing sessions. The first tutorial presented the Hadoop framework, explaining common designpatternsandhowtoprogramusingtheMapReduceparadigm.Thesecondtuto- rialcoveredthetopicofdeployingSoftware-DefinedNetworking(SDN)andNetwork FunctionsVirtualization(NFV)onlarge-scaletest-bedfacilities.Finally,thethirdtuto- rialfocusedonindexing,searching,andvisualizingmanagementtools. Inlinewithitseducationalmission,thisyeartheconferencealsoincludedanedu- cationalkeynote,whichwasgivenbyPietDemeester(GhentUniversity,iMinds,Bel- gium) on“ProvidingTipsand Tricksfor YoungResearchers” advancingin their PhD career. Additionally,AIMS 2015featureda researchkeynoteon the “Managementof Big Data:The Areasof Conflict” providedby BurkhardStiller (UniversityofZürich, Switzerland). VI Preface Thetechnicalprogramconsistedoftwosessions–coveringthetopicsofautonomic anddecentralizedmanagement,andsecurity,privacy,andmanagement–andincluded sevenfullpapers,whichwereselectedafterathoroughreviewingprocessoutofatotal of22submissions.Eachpaperreceivedatleastthreeindependentreviews. TheAIMSPhDworkshopisavenuefordoctoralstudentstopresentanddiscusstheir researchideas,andmoreimportantlytoobtainvaluablefeedbackfromtheAIMSaudi- ence abouttheir plannedPhD research work. This year, the workshopwas structured into two technicalsessions coveringthe managementof futurenetworksand security management.AllPhDpapersincludedinthisvolumedescribethecurrentstateofthese investigations,includingtheirclearresearchproblemstatements,proposedapproaches, andanoutlineofresultsachievedsofar.AtotalofninePhDpaperswerepresentedand discussed.Thesepaperswereselectedafteraseparatereviewprocessoutof24submis- sions,whileallPhDpapersreceivedatleastthreeindependentreviews,too. The present volume of the Lecture Notes in Computer Science series includes all paperspresentedatAIMS2015asdefinedwithintheoverallfinalprogram.Itdemon- strates againtheEuropeanscopeofthisconferenceseries, since mostofthe accepted papersoriginatefromEuropeanresearchgroups.Also,AIMS2015hasproventrueto itsdefinedDNAofaconferencewithastrongeducationalgoal,asindicatedbythehigh numberofsubmissionsattractedbythePhDWorkshop. TheeditorswouldliketothankthemanypeoplewhohelpedmakeAIMS2015sucha high-qualityandsuccessfulevent.Firstly,manythanksareaddressedtoallauthors,who submitted their contributionsto AIMS 2015,and to the lab session speakers,namely, JérômeFrançois,NielsBouten,RachidMijumbi,AbdelkaderLahmadi,andFrederick Beck,andthekeynotespeakersPietDemeesterandBurkhardStiller.Thegreatreview workperformedbythemembersofboththeAIMSTechnicalProgramCommitteeand thePhDStudentWorkshopCommitteeaswellasadditionalreviewersishighlyacknowl- edged.ThanksareaddressedalsotoRicardoSchmidtandTimWautersforsettingupand organizingthelabsessions.Additionally,manythanksareaddressedtothelocalorga- nizersforenablingalllogisticsandhostingtheAIMS2015event.
