AdvancesinArtificialIntelligence(AI)andcomputingenvironmentsthatcande- liverintelligenttechnologieseffectivelyhaveenabledanexplosioninintelligentap- plications.IDThavethepotentialtoexpandtheirsupportofdecisionmakinginsuch areas as finance, accounting, marketing, healthcare, medical and diagnostic sys- tems, military decisions, productionand operation,networks, traffic management, crisis response, human-machineinterfaces, financial and stock market monitoring and prediction, and robotics. Intelligent decision systems implement advances in intelligentagents,fuzzylogic,multi-agentsystems, artificialneuralnetworks,and geneticalgorithms,amongothers.Emergingareasofactiveresearchincludevirtual decisionenvironments,socialnetworking,3Dhuman-machineinterfaces,cognitive interfaces, collaborativesystems, intelligent web mining, e-commerce,e-learning, e-business,bioinformatics,evolvablesystems,virtualhumans,anddesignerdrugs. In this volume we publish research fromthe FourthKES InternationalSympo- siumonIntelligentDecisionTechnologies(KESIDT’12),hostedandorganizedby researchersinJapan.TheconferencewasheldinGifuCitylocatedinthecenterof Japan.GifuCityisknownforitstraditionsandrichhistory,includingits1300-year- oldtraditionofcormorantfishingontheNagaraRiverandGifuCastle. Thisbook containschaptersbasedonpapersselectedfromalargenumberofsubmissionsfor considerationforthesymposiumfromtheinternationalcommunity.Eachpaperwas double-blind,peer-reviewedby at least two independentreferees. The best papers were accepted based on recommendationsof the reviewers and after required re- visions had been undertaken by the authors. The final publication represents the currentleadingthoughtinintelligentdecisiontechnologies. He is currently a Professor of Knowledge Engineer- ing, Soft Computing and Management Engi- neering at the Graduate School of Information, Production & Systems, Waseda University, after a professor of Human Informatics and Knowl- edge Engineering at the Osaka Institute of Tech- nology,Japan and was with RyukokuUniversity, Kyoto for about 10 years each. Before moving to Academia, he was with Fujitsu Co. Ltd. for about 10 years. Robert Howlett is the Executive Chair and Chief Executive of the KES (Knowledge-Based and Intelligent Engineering Systems) International. KES is an associaton dedicated to knowledge ex- changeandthedisseminationofresearchresultsin theareasofintelligentsystems,sustainabilityinen- ergy and buildings and innovation through knowl- edge transfer. He is a Director of the Institute of Knowledge Transfer, the body for knowledge pro- fessionals and researchers working in innovation, knowledgetransferandenterprise.He holdsa Vis- iting Professorship in Enterprise at Bournemouth Editors IX University.HeholdsaPhDinIntelligentSystemsfromtheUniversityofBrighton, an MPhilfromSussex Universityand a BSc(Hons)fromPortsmouthPolytechnic. He is a Chartered Engineer and a Chartered InformationTechnologyPractitioner.
