She holds a PhD in Management and a BSc in Sociology. Her research focuses on the information and communications technology and change in private and public sector organisations with particular interest in gov- ernance, compliance, audit and evaluation. She has obtained research funding from the European Union, EPSRC, ESRC and from industry. Recent projects have included a longitudinal study on the National Programme for IT, managing ICT in healthcare organisations, implementing compliance systems in fi nancial services fi rms, and cross-national policy and practice on security, identity and management systems. In 2005, she set up the MSc Information Systems and Management course at Warwick Business School, which aims to promote the ‘university apprentice’ scheme by plac- ing students in organisations for their dissertation work. The course is now a leader in this market and is currently expanding each year. Wendy is on the editorial board of seven academic journals and regularly publishes her research work. She currently serves as Hon Treasurer with an education charity, the Fellowship of Postgraduate Medicine. She is c o-founder (with David Finnegan) of the Business, Technology, Leadership and Management research unit at Warwick and regularly consults with organisations on ICT strategy, change management, audit and evaluation. Dr David Finnegan gained a PhD in Information Systems from Warwick Business School, focusing on business systems integration and customer relationship man- agement. With 20 years of senior management experience, he specialises in business systems integration. His PhD in this area was sponsored by IBM. With an inter- national background in management and IT consultancy, he combines research and experiential learning where students apply theory to practice. For the MSc in Information Systems and Management, he partnered with Deloitte to give students a working experience of the management consultancy life cycle with a close coupling between theory and practice. This fulfi ls the vision of this course and his ambi- tion to provide business school students with practically based work placements vii viii ABOUT THE EDITORS (a university apprenticeship model). Previous roles have included working for the Swedish Home Offi ce and working in the e-business environment in strategic lead- ership, mentoring and auditing roles. David moved into academia where he carries out research into ICT business, management and leadership. He recently published a book on customer relationship management and is currently working on a research study comparing integrated healthcare in Sweden and the UK. Contributors Dr Jannis Angelis is an Assistant Professor of Operations Management at Warwick Business School, where he teaches operations management and strategy, and an asso- ciated researcher with the Centre for Technology, Policy and Industrial Development at MIT. Following a doctorate on numerical fl exibility and productivity in FMCGs at Cambridge, Dr Angelis worked in venture capital in London. Prior roles also include work on competitiveness at Harvard, fl exibility and productivity at Stanford and Berkeley, lean and behavioural operations at Cambridge, high performance practices in aerospace at Oxford, and Asian export processing zones at the UN. Sean Brennan had a long career in the NHS, initially in Pathology then as a General Manager and Information Manager responsible for the (then) Resource Management Initiative, Medical Audit and IT staff. In the mid-1990s Sean was seconded to the Department of Health as Clinical Audit Advisor and then appointed Project Manager for the national Electronic Patient Record Project in England. In 2000, Sean joined Northgate Information Solutions (formerly MDIS) as Head of Healthcare Strategy, experiencing life in the commercial sector. Two years later he launched Clinical Matrix Limited, a network of consultants engaged in strategy development, business cases, clinical change management and general healthcare informatics projects for the NHS and commercial customers. His bestselling book The NHS IT Project: The Biggest Computer Programme in the World . . . Ever! was published in April 2005 by Radcliffe Publishing and considers the National Programme for IT (NPfIT), as being delivered by Connecting for Health (CfH), in the context of the last 20 years of health IT. Ken Eason is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Human Sciences at Loughborough University and Senior Consultant in the Bayswater Institute in London. For 40 years Ken has researched the impact of IT on organisations using socio-technical systems theory as an explanatory framework and has published widely on the challenges of integrating technical developments with changing organ- isational reality.
