He is considered one of the greatest and most influential philosophers and physicians in Iranian history and civilization. The reputation of his specialty and his vision for various sciences, as well as the translation of his exquisite books in various fields, including modern medicine, philosophy, etc. in various languages and teaching them in some of world’s best universities, testifies to this fact. The book “The Canon of Medicine” is one of Abu Ali Sina’s most valuable medical records that has been cited for centuries by doctors in the region. The following sentence is part of his valuable quotations on medical science, which today can be used by any medical practitioner: “The science of medicine is the means by which one can become aware of the qualities of the human body; the goal is to maintain health and restore it during illness.” It would also be our honor to dedicate this book to Hugo L. Obwrgeser, William H. Bell, and Larry J. Peterson, pioneers in the field of orthognathic surgery, who are considered by oral and maxillofacial surgeons to have been three fundamental contributors to the complex task of improving the facial aesthetics in patients. This book is also dedicated to Prof. Seyyed Mehdi Jafari from the bottom of my heart. He was the master of masters of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery in Iran and left us in 2020. Foreword Maxillofacial surgery’s broad scope of practice provides a wide variety of impactful ways to improve the lives of patients; these range from managing and curing diseases and disorders to improving or restoring form and function. Although there is always room for improving the ways surgeons diagnose and manage disease, major changes in those strategies evolve rela- tively slowly. In contrast, the field of reconstructive maxillofacial surgery is brimming with innovations and advances in preoperative planning, biomaterials, and surgical techniques. This rapid evolution of knowledge places a duty upon the surgeon to regularly update their under- standing of facial disorders, whether due to congenital or developmental deformities, trau- matic injuries, prior surgical interventions, or the effects of aging. Historically, at least in most parts of the world, procedures such as orthognathic surgery and cleft lip repair were not categorized as cosmetic in nature. There are a variety of reasons for this, often related to lack of third-party reimbursement for cosmetic surgery or due to the mis- taken belief that cosmetic surgery was not to be done by surgeons focused on major surgical interventions. Yet, even our patients realize that the outcomes of procedures performed to cor- rect facial deformities almost also enhance facial appearance, and are therefore cosmetic in nature. Drs. Keyhan, Amirzade-Iranaq, Fattahi, Bagheri, and Bohluli, as senior editors, along with a host of talented contributors, bring valuable new information related to facial cosmetic sur- gery to the surgeon’s fingertips through their comprehensive and integrated approach to this broad topic. The book created by these individuals, “Integrated Procedures in Facial Cosmetic Surgery,” utilizes this realization of the innate appearance enhancing nature of most types of reconstructive surgery to create a novel way to present various types of facial reconstructive surgery, with more focus on the esthetic aspects of the procedures than is seen in prior texts relating to the field of maxillofacial surgery. The book is organized into chapters that initially concentrate on various aspects of facial anatomy, providing concise discussions of contemporary surgical approaches to achieving cos- metic improvements. Then, following each group of chapters dedicated to an aspect of facial surgery, a discussion is presented to provide an expert summary. This is unique in surgical book design and will further improve the reader’s understanding. Integrated Procedures in Facial Cosmetic Surgery has introductory chapters that cover the history of facial esthetic surgery, as well as chapters on facial anatomy and photography. Then, the chapters appear in a top-down, outside-in organization that facilitate the reader’s ability to quickly locate information they seek. The text is concisely written, valuing the busy surgeon’s time, and is beautifully illustrated with high-resolution, well-oriented pre- and postoperative patient photographs and well-composed intraoperative images. References are provided that allow the reader to dive more deeply into topics and further investigate the evidence supporting statements made in the book. A wide variety of surgical disciplines will find this book useful, including oral- maxillofacial surgeons, otolaryngologists, plastic surgeons, facial cosmetic surgeons, and all others who are having an interest in enhancing patient lives by improving facial appearance. Residents and vii viii Foreword fellows will also find the book highly instructive as they learn their craft. This text will be a valuable addition to the library of any surgeon seeking a comprehensive, up-to-date resource to help them learn all aspects of the very broad and exciting field of integrated facial cosmetic surgery.
