It is also a valuable tool for those who want to help others learn. The instructional guide is a companion book to The ArcGIS Imagery Book. Each chapter in that volume includes learning opportunities such as Quickstarts, with information about relevant software, data, and web resources, and Learn ArcGIS lessons to provide hands-on practice in the skills discussed. This instructional guide starts where the first volume left off. In this guide you’ll find videos and activities that support the development of basic skills and understanding about remotely sensed imagery. Each chapter also includes scenario-based lessons that put those concepts to use in answering questions and addressing real-world issues. If a Swiss army knife is a multi-purpose, versatile, and adaptable tool, then consider this guide the Swiss army knife for learning and teaching about the integration of imagery with GIS. Use it as a personal tutorial, a refresher course, a lab manual, or a repository of training activities. Adapt it to meet your needs. A personal tutorial Use this guide on your own to learn about imagery. You’ll learn how to make maps that combine imagery with other data layers and services in ArcGISSM Online and to share them in a variety of ways. You’ll learn how to access different types of imagery online and to use that imagery to create and map your own new data. You’ll use imagery to observe and analyze change over time by looking at sequential satellite images and using online apps such as Esri’s ChangeMatters Viewer. Go through the book chapter by chapter or hone in on the topics and skills that are most relevant to your own situation. There is no wrong way to use this guide—make it work for you. A refresher course Use this guide to update your own remote sensing and imagery skills and knowledge. Instead of working with software and imagery stored on your computer, you’ll learn to leverage the power of cloud computing and open data. Discover opportunities to collaborate and share your maps and data with an ArcGIS Online organizational account. Get hands-on practice in 3D imagery, live imagery feeds, and crowdsourcing with ArcGIS Online. Whatever your prior imagery or GIS experience, with this guide you can lift yourself to a new level. A lab manual Use this guide with a group of students to provide practice in basic skills and content. Focus on particular chapters and skills one at a time or encourage learners to go through the entire book at their own pace. By using the book in this way, you are offering people a foundation of imagery skills and knowledge they can build upon down the road. A repository of training activities Use this guide to design and deliver GIS/imagery training in a focused setting such as teacher professional development. Have you been asked to provide training in “the basics” of remote sensing, the use of imagery to analyze change over time, or the interpretation of Landsat data? The Instructional Guide for The ArcGIS Imagery Book will provide you with resources for all these requests. No matter what the focus of the training or learning, this guide provides the essential ingredients to combine and blend in any way you choose.
