C&I Lesson Planning Terms and Components 2 1 3-5 6 7 Goals of the Session Learn the steps of the instructional cycle. Be able to apply the steps of the instructional cycle to the course you currently teach. Explore strategies to improve instructional delivery. What is the cycle of instruction? The cycle of instruction is the basic way a lesson is presented to students. The model that we will explore today is based on Madeline Hunter’s Seven Step Lesson Plan. Why do teachers need to follow an instructional cycle? A well-written lesson or idea can be ineffective if not presented in a way that leads to student acquisition of the concept or skill. The big idea for the students is to demonstrate understanding of the concept or skill. The big idea for the teacher is to get feedback from students as to whether they ‘get it’ or not. All Steps Every Day? No! The instructional cycle may be completed in one lesson or may stretch over a period of several days. Now, in a perfect world this cycle would run smoothly in every classroom every day. You will divert from this outline; however, try your best to implement the complete cycle on a consistent basis. It will help you on your way to becoming a master teacher! Step 1 Focus & Review-3-5 min. Focus students for learning, complete a “Do Now”, relate today’s lesson to previous learning, diagnose skills needed by students, build background knowledge, encourage motivation for learning. Step 2 Statement of Objective-2-3 min. Tell students exactly what they will learn and why it is important State an aim for what will be accomplished. Step 3 Input and Modeling of Information by Teacher -20 min. Actual teaching of the lesson – what the teacher does in front of the class to present the knowledge, skill or process, examples: ◦ Discovery through exploration/lab ◦ Reading, listening, or observing ◦ Model the skill or process for students ◦ Disseminate information through lecture ◦ Explain new vocabulary
