ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Th e last thing I expected to bring home from a January speakers’ conference in Cancun, Mexico was this book contract; perhaps sandy sneakers and sunburn, but not a July manuscript deadline. Somehow, in that crowded convention hall, my husband Tom found me refi lling my cup with healthy green tea. He took my hand and led me away, telling me, “Skip your next session, there’s someone you must meet.” Th at someone turned out to be Matthew Holt, a patient, straight- talking editor at Wiley. After only two conversations Matt trusted me to be just as forthright as he is and believed in this book enough to share it with editor Emily Conway, who saw my vision and made this book possible. Of course, it all started well before that sunny winter day. Everything in this book, everything I know and everything I love about being a woman comes from the amazing women and men in my life—starting with my mom and dad, Marise and Sal, my grandmother Mama Pearl and my sister Karen. My best friends Beth, Carol, Deb, Ellen, Jan, Missy and Nadia continue to teach me the power of fusion. My great teachers and mentors, especially my second mom, Blanche, all gave me models that I can only aspire to emulate. Th anks to the Fusion women, Blanche, Chris, Evie, Jan, Leigh, Maggie, Martha and Susan, who inspired the Fusion and inspire me to attain the impossible. vii A viii CKNOWLEDGMENTS I’d also like to thank the entire team at Vickie Milazzo Insti- tute for their passion and for helping me create a business and story to write about and the thousands of CLNC®s, the Certi- fi ed Legal Nurse Consultants, who have inspired me to live my 5 Promises as I help them to live theirs. Th anks to Howard Caesar, my minister at Unity Church, who reminds me that life is good—all the time. Th e following people helped me bring this book to life. Leigh Owen and Chris Rogers—you gave time, patience and massive amounts of red ink in teaching me everything you know about bringing words to paper. You are not only terrifi c mentors but awesome friends. I thank you both from the bottom of my heart. Special thanks also to Evie Baron- Hernandez, my fi ery friend and sister from another life; Dana Zera, who laughed with me along the way; Lee F. Smith, who civilized my grammar barbarian ten- dencies; Maggie Kattan- Arroyos and Adrian Arroyos, who helped to bring visual form to the words; and especially Tom Ziemba, who gives me daily inspiration, is always there when my com- puter isn’t and helped me rediscover some of the stories I’d almost forgotten. Matt, next time we’re in Cancun the margaritas are on me.
