Information technology (IT) is the acquisition, processing, storage and dissemina- tion of vocal, pictorial, textual and numerical information by a microelectronics-based combination of computing and telecommunications. The term in its modern sense first appeared in a 1958 article published in the Harvard Business Review, in which au- thors Leavitt and Whisler commented that the new technology does not yet have a single established name. We shall call it information technology (IT).. Some of the modern and emerging fields of Information technology are next generation web tech- nologies, bioinformatics, cloud computing, global information systems, large scale knowledgebases, etc. IT is the area of managing technology and spans wide variety of areas that include but are not limited to things such as processes, computer software, information sys- tems, computer hardware, programming languages, and data constructs. In short, any- thing that renders data, information or perceived knowledge in any visual format whatsoever, via any multimedia distribution mechanism, is considered part of the IT domain. IT provides businesses with four sets of core services to help execute the business strategy: business process automation, providing information, connecting with customers, and productivity tools. IT professionals perform a variety of functions (IT Disciplines/Competencies) that ranges from installing applications to designing complex computer networks and in- formation databases. A few of the duties that IT professionals perform may include data management, networking, engineering computer hardware, database and soft- ware design, as well as management and administration of entire systems. Information technology is starting to spread further than the conventional personal computer and network technologies, and more into integrations of other technologies such as the use of cell phones, televisions, automobiles, and more, which is increasing the demand for such jobs. Agricultural engineering is the engineering discipline that applies engineering science and technology to agricultural production and processing. Agricultural engi- neering combines the disciplines of animal biology, plant biology, and mechanical, civil, electrical and chemical engineering principles with a knowledge of agricultural principles. Agricultural Engineers may perform tasks as planning, supervising and managing the building of dairy effluent schemes, irrigation, drainage, flood and water control systems, perform environmental impact assessments, agricultural product processing and interpret research results and implement relevant practices. A large percentage of VI ICITAE 2011 Preface agricultural engineers work in academia or for government agencies such as the United States Department of Agriculture or state agricultural extension services. Some are consultants, employed by private engineering firms, while others work in industry, for manufacturers of agricultural machinery, equipment, processing technology, and structures for housing livestock and storing crops. Agricultural engineers work in production, sales, management, research and development, or applied science. ICITAE 2011 is to bring together researchers working in many different areas of Information Technology and Agricultural Engineering to foster international collabo- rations and exchange of new ideas. The proceeding presents a selection of 117 papers from over 365 submissions from universities and industries all over the world based on their quality and relevancy to the conference. All the papers have been peer reviewed by the selected experts. These papers represent the latest development in the field of materials manufacturing technology, spanning from the fundamentals to new technologies and applications. Specially, these papers cover the topics of Information Technology and Agricultural Engineering. I believe that this book provides a greatly valuable reference for researchers in the field of Information Technology and Agricultural Engineering who wish to further understand the underlying mechanisms and create innovative and practical tech- niques, systems and processes. It should also be particularly useful for engineers in information technology and agriculture who are responsible for the efficient and effective operations.
