Library of Congress Catalog Card Number 61-18796 PRINTED IN U.S.A. FOREWORD The excellent reception which was given to the 1940-1960 edition of this Index encouraged us, as planned, to issue it on a continuing basis. The present volume covers the period 1961-1962. As with the first volume, we believe that the 1961-1962 compendium will again help research workers, teachers and students to locate quickly those current reviews in which they may be interested. Monographs related to organic chemistry published in 1961-1962 are also listed in Part III, including new editions of standard works as well. The format used in the 1940-1960 Index proved satisfactory and has been retained. While the 1961- 1962 issue stands on its own, it will be most useful in conjunction with the 1940-1960 volume. The increase in publication of review type articles and monographs in organic chemistry can be seen from the present Index. In the 1940-1960 issue, a period of twenty one years, some 7000 titles were listed; the two year period 1961-1962 yielded about 2500 titles. While it is not claimed that the listings are exhaustive, the major articles have been included and references cited in them will lead to many other important résumés. For the years 1961-1962, the Bibliography of Reviews published by the American Chemical Society will also prove valuable. We have tried to include articles from the major sources in English, French and German. Russian review works (translated to English) have now also been added. A few articles which were inadvertently omitted from the alphabetical listings are given in an Appendix at the very end. These include some articles, among others, from the Journal of Structural Chemistry (U.S.S.R.), and others also for the years 1961-1962. Complete author and subject indexes are included, with adequate cross-indexing in the latter. While the majority of articles listed is directly on organic chemistry, there are many which border on biochemistry, pharmaceutical chemistry, bacteriology, technological developments, etc. Monographs on physical aspects, instrumentation and on related subjects have also been noted in Section III, and a few also in the Appendix. We have listed in this volume a number of articles which deal specifically with hazards in the use of various chemicals, such as perchlorates, peroxides, solvents, insecticides, etc. It is hoped that persons con cerned with the use and storage of these chemicals or other hazardous materials or processes will refer to these articles and also make them available to others. Disastrous incidents can sometimes be foreseen by particular caution in these matters, and we take this opportunity to stress this point, especially as full articles on these topics are now available for some areas. The book by Sax, and other sources on hazardous chemicals should also be consulted.1 We are again pleased to include a selection of articles from the Journal of Chemical Education. Many of these papers are of interest not only for teachers and students, but also, for practicing chemists and other scientists, since they are fully professional in nature and have good subject content. Articles in the International Edition of Angewandte Chemie, published in English, are now also available and have been listed. We wish to express our sincere appreciation to many persons who have written to commend or criticize this Index, and who have also made suggestions for specific inclusions or noted omissions. Some of the items cited in the Appendix were thus kindly called to our attention. V 1See for example the new series on Safety in the Laboratory, in the Journal of Chemical Education. This Index could not possibly have been undertaken by us without the complete and especially able assistance of Elenora R. Kharasch, who was responsible for the library copy work and the major tasks of preparing the manuscript and the final copy for offset printing. Her efforts to achieve a near-perfect manuscript have, we trust, been well rewarded in the present volume. A list of publishers' addresses is again included on the very last pages of the Index, for convenience of users. The 1963-1964 edition of the Index is now in preparation; we will again appreciate any constructive comments.
