However, this volume has been produced totally “in house” at Kew, as we have now taken over publication. We have scanned books and journals received in the Index Kewensis office by 31 December 1995 or seen at the Natural History Museum (BM) during the five years. Names of all taxonomic ranks from family downwards are included. Names at ranks above genus are arranged alphabetically under families in a separate sequence at the beginning. Names at the rank of genus downwards are arranged alphabetically under genus headings. These are followed by an appendix containing a list of new genera 1n alphabetic order under family. At each rank there are three categories of names: new taxon, new name (nom. nov.) and new combination. An entry can be divided up as follows: Name, Author, Bibliographic details, and either geography if a new taxon of specific or infraspecific rank, or replaced synonym if a new name, or basionym if a new combination. Name The spelling of names is changed, if they are incorrect, in accordance with the appropriate Article of the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature (ICBN). Each genus is assigned to a family according to R.K. Brummitt, Vascular Plant Families and Genera (1992), ISBN 0O- 947643-43-5. Authorship The author of the basionym appears in brackets before the publishing author in entries of new combinations. Since its publication in 1992 R.K. Brummitt & C.E. Powell, Authors of Plant Names, ISBN 0-947643-44-3, has been used as a standard for the abbreviation of names of basionym authors. However, if a surname of a co-author is given as, for example, ‘Smith’, it is not possible to know which ‘Smith’ it is and these names are left as given. The name of the publishing author 1s always given in full. Bibliographic details The same journal abbreviations are used as are found in the Kew Record of Taxonomic Literature relating to Vascular Plants. New journal title abbreviations are published regularly in Kew Record. Nomenclatural status A note is sometimes added after the bibliographic details, indicating the following: (1) the original spelling of the epithet if it has been changed; (2) the status of a name, if incorrectly stated by the author, such as FOREWORD when an author writes ‘sp. nov.’ where ‘nom. nov.’ or ‘comb. nov.’ is appropriate; (3) the term ‘nom. nov.’, used to indicate an avowed substitute for a previously validly published name according to Arts. 7.3, 33.2 and 33.30 TCBIN: (4) details which might affect nomenclatural validity, as defined by the ICBN; (5) the term ‘isonym’, used to indicate a new combination which has already been made by another author; we do not go out of our way to find this information but it is included if known. Geography Countries are listed for specimens cited in the article, not where they might occur. The country of the type collection is given first. Geography is not stated for ranks above species level. S. Hollis S R.K.
