From the moment of birth, the infant's father and mother are devoted to protecting the hfe and health of their child. During infancy, his efforts in communication, his spiritual growth, and his play activities are also guided by his parents. As the months and years of infancy advance, the child shares with his parents these responsibilities. By the time he is old enough to enter kindergarten, his parents have taught him to feed and dress himself, to listen to stories, to meet toilet needs, to follow safety rules, and to be a participating member of the family. This great begin- ning in the child's education shows the parents truly to be teachers* parents are teachers, the all but indispensable teachers. And as teachers, parents always have had the first and largest responsibility for edu- cating their children. . . . The fact that we have established public schools is not a surrender by parents of their basic responsibility for education. Each parent still has that responsibility.! * The Preschool Curriculum of the Chicago Public Schools. t David Guferson.
