The annual Beulah Kite • Free Fill on Coff ee Thermos Fly brings in kite enthusiasts from around the region for a two-day whirlwind of watching objects fl y the friendly skies. In Open Mon.-Sat. 6 a.m.-8 p.m. past years, truck-sized kites resembling Sylvester the Cat and Tweety Bird chased each other above the city. The event is Sun. 8 a.m.-3 p.m. free and a fun outing for the whole family. The Coteau Properties Company’s Freedom Mine is America’s largest lignite coal mine. The Freedom Mine supplies more than 15 million tons of lignite coal annually to Dakota Coal Company, a subsidiary of Basin Electric Power Cooperative. Dakota Coal then provides this lignite to nearby power plants producing over 1,600 megawatts of low cost electricity, and to the Great Plains Synfuels Plant, the nation’s only commercial scale coal gasifi cation plant. It gasifi es lignite to produce an average 160 million cubic feet of natural gas daily, plus several agricultural and chemical byproducts. The gasifi cation plant is owned and operated by Dakota Gasifi cation Company, another Basin Electric subsidiary. The Coteau Properties Company TThe Coteau Properties Company, a subsidiary of The North American Coal Corporation, was formed in 1972. Coteau owns and operates the Freedom Mine, named to highlight the important role it plays in securing America’s freedom from dependence on foreign energy sources.
