It gives me great pleasure to welcome, introduce, and recommend this
book byHisAllHolinessEcumenical PatriarchBartholomew.
It has been a personal privilege for me to become acquainted with the
ministry and initiatives of the Ecumenical Patriarch over the past few
years,duringwhichperiodwehavebothhadoccasiontoexchangeformal
and informal visits at the European Commission in Brussels as well as at
theEcumenicalPatriarchateinIstanbul.
The book is aptly entitled In the World, Yet Not of the World because
PatriarchBartholomewspeaksfromthedepthoftheOrthodoxChristian
tradition dating back to the earliest Apostolic community, while at the
same time addressing the breadth ofcrucial global issues confronting our
contemporary world. With his historical background and spiritual heri-
tage, he speaks comfortably and convincingly—at once with authority
and humility—about such burning problems as racial discrimination or
religious tolerance, religion and politics, terrorism or corruption, human
rights and freedom of conscience, as well as ecological protection and
world hunger.
ForalmosttwodecadestheEcumenicalPatriarchhasprovidedextraor-
dinary leadership on raising people’s awareness about international peace
and the natural environment. He has worked tirelessly for the reconcilia-
tion of Christian Churches and greater understanding among the major
faith communities of the world. He has used his spiritual position and
international profile to decry the global economy and the growing mis-
trustbetween Eastand West.
I know few religious leaders of his ecumenical stature who travel as
widely to address such a diversity of audiences—religious and secular,
political and social, interchurch or interfaith. This is why it is both a
pleasure and a privilege to read these texts and messages, a documentary

witness to the Ecumenical Patriarch’s remarkable service and extraordi-
naryministry.
There is nothing either archaic or arcane about the statements of this
religiousleader.PatriarchBartholomewknowshowtoconnectseemingly
unrelatedworlds.Itisnowonderhehasbeencalledabridgebuilder.His
words are influential and inspiring. And as such, they deserve the widest
circulationandattention.

This volume contains a selection of major addresses and significant mes-
sagesaswellaspublicstatementsinitiatedbyHisAllHolinessEcumenical
PatriarchBartholomewonavarietyofcriticalsocial,global,andinterfaith
issues. The original documents have been edited solely for the sake of
structure and consistency, while footnotes have been added to provide
readers with the historical context of events or theological explanation of
terms.Portions ofthisbook have previouslyappeared intheBiographical
Note and inChapter 8 (‘‘TheTransfiguration oftheWorld’’) oftheEcu-
menical Patriarch’s Encountering the Mystery: Understanding Orthodox
ChristianityToday(NewYork:Doubleday,2008)andappearherewiththe
kindpermissionofDoubleday.
This book is the first in a projected series of three volumes that will
feature a selection of texts by the Ecumenical Patriarch. The second vol-
umewillincludehisecumenicalandtheologicaladdresses,whilethethird
volumewillassemblehisenvironmentalstatements.
Meanwhile,readersareencouragedtoconsultaseparatevolume,which
represents the formal, comprehensive collection of the Ecumenical Patri-
arch’sencyclicalletters,addresses,andinterviewsonissuesrelatedtoenvi-
ronmental degradation, global warming, and climate change. Topics
covered include the ecological symposia and award responses as well as
numerousrelatedoccasions,suchasinternationalconferences,ecclesiasti-
