This book derives both from long
personal interest in Angola and from
direct personal experience there.
In general, it is about the present
condition and crisis of the peoples of
the Third World. In particular, it is
about some of the most deprived
members of the Third World; about
their own history, their condition to¬
day, and their effort to help them¬
selves. Because these people have had
to offer armed resistance to their co¬
lonial oppressors, it deals with guer¬
rilla warfare; but it is far more a book
about the cultural and political
themes and ideas of liberation which
inspire the people of Angola—those
which enable them to face the present
with courage and the future with
hope.
For in the eye of the storm that now
rages there, a serenity of mind may
be found among its men and women;
a serenity based on the belief that, no
