Philip Hammond MP, Woolwich (UK). 31 A brief life profile… Bro Abdoel Shakoer Hoeseni Nasir Ahmad B.A., LL.B. Bro. Abdoel Shakoer Hoeseni was born on 7 February, 1935 in District Suriname. He had his early education at the Saron School, situated at Slangenhoutstraat, Paramaribo, to which he used to travel by train. His father had a small business selling ice-bowls. The family moved to Nickerie in 1946 where Abdoel Shakoer Hoeseni worked at a sawmill for some time, then he returned to Paramaribo and worked for three years in rice fields in Leiding 19, a place about 20 kilometres from Paramaribo. He worked for Maulvi Ahmadali, as well, and during this period, he be- came very close to Maulvi Ahmadali and his family, and in 1951 he married Maulvi Ahmadali’s youngest daughter, Haleema. He also used to visit Mr Mohammed Hanief Kalloe’s shop situated at Klip- stenenstraat in Paramaribo, and this re- sulted in starting his own tailoring busi- ness, viz. A. Shakoer Tailors, at Pad van Wanica [the name of the road has now been changed to Indira Ghandhi Road] on 12 April, 1960. In May 1974 he migrated with his family to Holland and settled in The Hague. He got a job in the classified binding section of the Government Printing Press and after working there for almost 15 years he retired on 19 January, 1988 for health reasons. Abdoel Shakoer Hoeseni was member of the youth organisation of the Imdadia Isha‘at-i Islam. [The Imdadia Isha‘at-i Islam at Pad van Wanica, a big branch of the Suriname Islamic Association (SIV- AAIIL).] At that time Mr Aboebakr Twahir Ahmadali, the eldest son of the late Maulvi Ahmadali, was the President. He was also very active in the activities of the Stichting Qur’an Fonds Suriname and generously contributed towards the reprint edition of the Dutch translation of the Qur’an rendered by the learned Bro. Soedewo that was originally published by the Indonesia Ahmadiyya Anjuman. 2 | Page When lot of Ahmadis migrated to the Netherlands from Suriname in 1974, they joined an organisa- tion which already existed in The Hague under the name Islamitisch Genootschap Nederland. It was founded by Maulana Ghulam Ahmad Bashir who was its first President. As most of the members who had then joined the organisation had migrated from Suriname they wanted to have a mosque. But in those days, because of Ahmadis being declared a non-Muslim mi- nority in Pakistan, members were confused and the majority of the Board Members were reluctant to retain the name Ahmadiyya for the organisation. As a result, a group of people who were eager to retain the name Ahmadiyya under the leadership of Mr Noer Sardar started to collect dona- tions to buy a building to construct a mosque which should be affiliated to the Lahore Ahmadiyya Movement. The Board thus organised elections in 1975, and as the majority of the members were of pro-Lahore Ahmadiyya aqeeda, a new pro-Lahore Ahmadiyya board was elected. Among oth- ers, the following members were elected: Mr Noer Sardar, Mr Abdoel Shakoer Hoeseni, and Mr Shamsoeddin Ilahibaks. Hence, the Lahore Ahmadiyya members founded the Ahmadiyya Anjuman Isha‘at Islam Nederland in 1976. In 1977, a building was purchased at Paul Krugerlaan, very close to Shakoer Hoeseni’s house, and its ground floor was used as a mosque. The pro-Lahore Ahmadiyya board members individually stood surety for the Anjuman’s debts as far as the purchase of the building was concerned. Bro Shakoer Hoeseni and a few others participated manually in the work of transforming the ground floor of the building into a mosque. In 1989, Bro Shakoer Hoeseni was one of the founding members of the Stichting Ahmadiyya Isha‘at- i-Islam, The Hague, founded exclusively to publish Lahore Ahmadiyya Anjuman literature into Dutch. Within a year the Stichting Ahmadiyya Anjuman purchased a building of its own at Kepplerstraat and a mosque was built on the upper storey. In 1996 the Dutch translation of the Holy Qur’an by Mr Soedewo of Indonesia was reprinted. Many other books were also translated and printed, such as The Religion of Islam and A Manual of Hadith. Mr Abdoel Shakoer Hoeseni remained a board member of the Stichting Ahmadiyya Isha‘at-i-Islam till his death on 26 May 2013. May his soul rest in peace! * * * ٌ مْيِ لَح ٌرْوُكشَ هّٰللاَو ۭ ْ مُكَ ل ْرِفْغَ يَو مْ ُكَ ل ُ هفْ ِعضٰ ّ ّيُ اً نَسحَ اضً ْرَ ق هّٰللا اوضُ ِرقُْ ت نْ ِ ا ُ َ “If you set apart for Allah a goodly portion, He will double it for you and for- give you. On this occasion, when a very 4 | Page dear brother of ours has departed, we are thankful that he led a very noble life and that Allah will grant him a peaceful place as promised in the Qur’an. Mr Basharat Ahmadali (Managing Director of the Decentralization and Local Government Strengthening Programme of the Ministry of Regional Development, Suriname), Mrs Samina Malik (USA) and Mr Nasir Ahmad (UK) paid tributes to the noble character and voluntary services rendered to the cause of Islam by the late Bro. Hoeseni. They also conveyed messages of condolence from their respective communities. We will try to repro- duce in this issue the texts of some of the contributions. A very large number of family members, members of the Jama‘at and friends and admirers from all walks of life attended the funeral service. Hazrat Ameer Dr A. K. Saeed led the Janaza prayer and offered du‘a at the grave. In the evening after dinner at the Kepplerstraat Mosque, Bro Noer Sardar conducted a concluding condolence session. Bro. Reza Ghafoerkhan recited the whole of Chapter At-Tatfif. It deals with people who make a default in their duties. Its verses from 18 onwards mention the record of the righteous and give a brief description of the bounties and blessings granted to them in the afterlife. Mrs Samina Malik gave a summary in Urdu of what she said about the late Bro. Shakoer Hoeseni at the Westduin hall for the benefit of the elders. By this time Dr Zahid Aziz and Mr Shahid Aziz had also arrived by the evening flight. Mr Shahid Aziz, Secretary of the UK Jama‘at eulogised the services of the late Bro. Hoeseni and pointed out that it was his devotion and sincerity towards the noble cause that had attracted people not only from all parts of Holland but from abroad as well. He expressed his regrets for not being able to arrive in time for the Janaza. Bro. Abdoel Saeed Hoeseni, eldest son of the deceased and a board-member of the Stichting Ahmadiyya Anjuman, Mrs Haleema Hoeseni and immediate family members are grateful to Hazrat Ameer for gracing the occasion with his presence and to all others who came all the way from Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Utrecht, Almere and other far-off cities, and also to Mrs Samina Malik, director Publications of the Ahmadiyya Anjuman, Ohio, USA, Mr Azhar-ud-Din Ahmad from Woking (UK), Dr Zahid Aziz from Nottingham (UK) and Mr Shahid Aziz, (Secretary of the UK Jama‘at) for attending the funeral. A Special Meeting at the Paul Krugerlaan Mosque, The Hague On 29th June, a special meeting, which had been scheduled earlier, was held late in the evening at the Paul Krugerlaan Mosque, The Hague. It was organised by its president Mr. Sjaikh Kasiem. From r. to l. Mr. Sjaikh Kasiem, president of the Jamaat, Hazrat Ameer Dr. A. K. Saeed, Head of the Lahore Ahmadiyya Movement in Islam, Lahore (Pakistan), Mr. Shahid Aziz, Secretary UK Jama’at, Dr. Zahid Aziz (UK), Imam Mumtaz Mohammed Amin Page | 5 A view of the Gathering Another view of the Gathering Hazrat Ameer Dr A. K. Saeed, who was on a week’s visit to Berlin, had arrived in The Hague on the 25th. Dr Zahid Aziz and Mr Shahid Aziz arrived the same day late in the evening. Both, after attending the concluding condolence meeting at the Kepplerstraat Mosque, came to the Paul Krugerlaan Mosque to participate in the special meeting. The main subject of the meeting was the message of the Ahmadiyya Movement and what are the responsibilities of its members to further the cause of Islam. All three speakers spoke on various aspects of the message of the Ahmadiyya Movement. It was followed by a lively question/answer session. Hazrat Ameer specially em- phasised the importance of taking of the Pledge. He argued that its object, as with any other oath, is to commit oneself to some important task – and the cause of Islam is the most ardu- ous task these days when it is under threat from intellectual, social as well as political onslaughts. To fight on these fronts is a jihad as difficult as fighting on a battlefield. At the end, several members re-pledged themselves. During the question Mr. Haroen Badloe time, long hours of fasting and how to fix the taraweeh and tahajjud prayer timings, keeping in view the early sehr timings also came under discussion. On this occasion our learned Bro. Haroen Badoellah did wonderful job of translating all the speeches and questions/answers into Dutch. His presence made the session really meaningful and fruitful for all. * * * 6 | Page Announcements and Obituaries Mrs. Fatima Meera Sahiba, Suva,Fiji Mr. Jalal-ud-Dean, our regular correspondent and a senior member of the Suva Jamaat in Fiji, has sent the sad news about the demise of Mrs Fatima Meera Sahiba, one of the longest serving mem- bers of Lahore Ahmadiyya Anjuman, Fiji on 10th June, 2013 at her residence at Flagstaff, Suva, Fiji.: Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi raji’oon. In Memory of late Bro Abdoel Shakoer Hoeseni Service to Allah and his Fellow Beings Mr. Basharat Ahmadali My dear Sister Halima, Assalamo alaikum I stand here on this very sad occasion to address you, the children, the family, the relations and friends of our late beloved “Mahase”- Abdoel Shakoer Hoeseni. I have come here specially from Suriname and am representing my wife Emma, my children, our Bhai Toyab and Bhabi Farida, the Ghafoerkhan family, Board of Directors and mem- bers of the Imdadia Isha’at Islam (branch of the S.I.V. in Paramaribo), members of the Board of the Quran Fund, and many friends of Shakoer Bhai in Suriname. Mr. Basharat Ahmadali (Brother-in-law), Suriname Let me first tell you who was Abdoel Shakoer Hoeseni? He was more known by two pet names which characterized his personality. The title of Mahase, which means someone of great respect because of his character, integrity and helpful attitude. This characteristic of his was discovered in him at a very early stage of his life by our elder brother Oesman when we lived together with him, our father and mother at Leiding 19. The other title of President, he got for his involvement in the management boards of the Ahmadiyya Anjuman Isha’at Islam Nederland and Ahmadiyya Isha'at-i-Islam Foundation in The Hague, Netherlands. Both these titles given by the family and the Jama’at show the kind of respect and personality he enjoyed among them. He was always friendly, helpful and willing to do anything for the family, friends, Jama’at and all the people around him. His priority was Islam and the mosque affairs. During all these years of married life you both have tried to live next to a mosque, starting at Leiding 19, next to Moefidoel Islam Mosque; then at Pad van Wanica, and then again next to the Mosque of Imdadia Islam. When you came to Holland you both, as members of the Jama’at, established and maintained connection with 8 | Page the Ahmadiyya Anjuman Isha’at Islam Nederland and the Ahmadiyya Isha’at-i-Islam Foundation and the Mosque, and continued to live not very far from the Mosque. This continued neighbourhood of a mosque and contribution towards the Jama’at and the Mosque is a special blessing which you both enjoyed. The Jama’at and friends always highly appreciated your devotion. Having lived and served the cause of Islam and the Movement must be a source of great satisfaction and comfort at this time of loss of companionship and sadness. Mahase, my dear brother-in-law, you always looked back upon those years with extreme thankful- ness when you enjoyed the great company of people like our father, late Moulvi Sheikh Ahmadali, elder brother-in-law, late Moulvi Hanief Sahebali, Bro Oesman Ahmadali (Imam), elder brothers, Aboebakr Ahmadali and Toyab Ahmadali, presidents of Imdadia Isha’at Islam. Riaz Ahmadali, my son, always talk highly of you and say that people like Shakoer uncle practiced the Koran in their daily lives. Indeed, many characteristics of a righteous person described in the Qur'an were to be found in him. We have every reason to be proud of him. With the passing away of Bro Shakoer a whole generation to which he belonged seems to have passed away. He was the youngest of a family of five. His two sisters Bismilla and Rasoelan and his two brothers Abdoel Rahman and Abdoel Razak have passed away before him. These five children were from the marriage between two British-Indian immigrants: (i) His father Mr. Abdullah Hussain who most probably hailed from Lucknow came to Suriname on contract in 1914. He travelled from Calcutta on April 25, 1914 and reached Suriname in 40 days on June 4, 1914 and was put to work at the Belwaarde plantation in Commewijne, Suriname. In 1934 he chose Abdoella as the first name and Hoeseni as family name. (ii) His mother’s name was Imamon Nabibux. In 1933 she chose Nabibux as family name. On November 27, 1913 she travelled along with her mother from Calcutta and reached Suriname in 42 days on 7 January 1914. The mother was put to work at Pieterzorg plantation in District Commewijne. On arrival in Suriname the girl’s age was 7. On 29th June 2013 Suriname Hindustani Immigrants will celebrate their 140th anniversary (June 5, 1873 – June 5, 2013). Thanks and tribute to all the British Indian Immigrants. These children were born in Nieuwzorg, Beneden Para, Van Drimmelen Polder, and District Suriname respectively. Bro Shakoer moved as a little boy with his sister to District Nickerie for a while together with his father. His mother passed away after his birth, so he was brought up by his two sisters. After some time his sister Bismilla moved from Nickerie to Leiding 19. At Leiding 19 they were known in the neighbourhood as “Nickerieman”. After some time his father came and entrusted care of Bro Shakoer to his daughter Bismilla. My father and Bro Shakoer’s father were “Jahazi” (companions of the ship) and it was here that they met each other by chance. Bro Shakoer came to work with my father and began his career working in rice fields, sowing of paddy, planting and harvesting paddy and grinding etc. He was doing everything that was related to agriculture and rice cultivation. He also helped my mother on the urd (black bram), beans and corn fields. While working in Leiding 19 he met my sister Haleema who was more known as Lima. They got married (Lima was 14 and Shakoer 17). First few children were born in Kandal/Leiding 19. He also learnt from my mother skill of tailoring. I still remember the mini garments which he sewed as a specimen. Then he started dressmaking business. His first work place was next to the Mosque of Moefidoel Islam. Then he moved to Pad Wanica where his children grew up, had training and education. Here he joined a reputable company of dressmaking. Again he found a residence next to a mosque. So you will see that he, Lima and the children were always near Page | 9 to and involved in the activities of a mosque and thus were always connected with the Jama’at. He also had been a board member of the “Imdadia Isha’at-i Islam”. He contributed to the publication of the reprint edition of the Holy Quran in Dutch, and was also associated with the School Board of Imdadia, LBGO school in Suriname. In 1974 he moved permanently to The Netherlands but his life style did not change. Here also he kept his strong relation with Islam and Islamic service. He had a great time in Steynlaan in The Hague. There Bro Shakoer made many friends. This is only possible when one welcomes them with an open heart along with their good and bad points and also forgives and ignores their weaknesses. Even within his family, he always tried his best to main- tain good relations. This is only possible when one takes initiative in promoting good relations by bringing reconciliation and consciously striving for amity. These are some of the basic qualities of a righteous person which have been mentioned in the Holy Qur'an. There was always an atmosphere of civility and warm welcome at his home. Everyone in the family, especially his friends were welcome. Almost every day was like a party going on at the house. It was bustling with members of the family and friends.. The accommodation at Steynlaan was not very spacious, but everyone was accommodated and no one had any complain. Even within this limited space and resources he would try to accommodate any Surinami, who migrated from Suriname and needed help and guidance. I had so much trust and faith in him and in my sister that I entrusted the responsibility of my two children Sharia and Riaz for sometime. The work for the Mosque was a passion with both of them in Suriname and it continued in Netherlands. How Allah blessed him for this selfless service and devotion my sister Lima and her children know very well. All praise be to Allah, the Most High, how his children, though he himself had no schooling, are highly educated, respectable and devoted to the cause of Islam. The reward has certainly been highly fulfilling. Both performed Hajj and their whole life has been a service for the cause of Islam. The Holy Prophet (sas)is reported to have said that with death addition of deeds comes to an end but blessings of three things continue to benefit the deceased and are a continuous source of for- giveness and comfort for him in the Hereafter : 1. Charity which continues to benefit people; 2. Knowledge which enriches and guide people; 3. Righteous children who do good deeds and pray for their deceased parents and near and dear ones. We are certain that the kind of charity which Bro Shakoer has been doing, such as helping in setting up a mosque and other related services, will continue to bring peace and be remembered for many years to come. We are sure that his contribution will continue through his children and grandchildren in spreading knowledge of Islam, supporting the cause of the Ahmadiyya Isha'at-i-Islam in the years to come. His children with knowledge and dedication along with my noble Sister will be source of blessings for our deceased Shakoer Bhai and for the progress and prosperity of the Ahmadali Family as well which has earned name and fame for them both in Suriname and in Holland. 10 | Page
