There are thousands of Engineering Colleges in India. These colleges produce lakhs of
Engineers every year. Just like in any other education discipline, the quality of education
offered in these colleges also ranges through excellent to average to below par. So it is
important for a student aspiring to be an engineer to ensure that he/she gets admission
into a good college. The process of selecting the good colleges need not be difficult. The
thumb rule is "try to get admission into those colleges where it is more difficult to get
admission into". When we say "more difficult", we mean the difficulty in terms of
competitiveness in a selection process. Broadly, the Engineering Colleges in India can be
classified into three categories.

JEE (Joint Entrance Examination)
Till the year 2012, there were primarily two National level Engineering Entrance
examinations – IIT-JEE & AIEEE.
IIT-JEE: The 16 IITs, IT-BHU (Institute of Technology – Banaras Hindu University) & ISM
(Indian School of Mines University, Dhanbad) admitted students from IITJEE All India rank
list. Other National level institutes like IISER (Indian Institute of Science Education &
Research), RGIPT (Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology), MERI (Marine
Engineering Research Institute) also considered IIT-JEE ranks for their admission. The
renowned Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore (IISc) also admits students from the
IITJEE rank list for their inter disciplinary undergraduate course - Bachelor in Science (BS).
AIEEE: The All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) was conducted by CBSE
for admissions into the National Institute of Technology (NITs). Other than the NITs, AIEEE is
also used as the admission test by a large number of well-known engineering colleges like
IIITs, DAIICT Gandhinagar, BITS Mesra, etc. From 2010 onwards, Delhi College of
Engineering (now accorded university status and known as Delhi Technological University)
admits students based on the results of AIEEE.
Changes in the National Level Engineering Entrance
Examinations
With Govt. of India's drive towards unifying the Engineering Entrance Examinations across
the country, changes have been proposed and implemented from the year 2013. The new
common entrance examination is called the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE).

Becoming an Engineer was in mind during school days. But getting into an IIT was a distant dream for me at that point of
