Schoedel, born 1930 in Stratford, Ontario, Canada, received his theological training at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, Missouri, and at the Divinity School of the University of Chicago. He taught at Valparaiso University, Valparaiso, Indiana, from 1955 to 1957, and at Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island, from 1960 to 1970. Since 1970 he has been a member of the Program in Religious Studies at the University of Illinois, Urbana, Illinois. He has contributed to the study of the literature of the early church-the Apostolic Fathers, the Gnostics, the Apologists, the anti-Gnostic Fathers, and others-and has given special attention to the relation between aspects of early Christianity and the Graeco-Roman world.
