As a result, Taoism suggests that you should: "Go with the flow.” I went on to say that some people disagree with this philosophy stating that the river could lead you over a waterfall to your death and therefore they recommend that you don’t go with the flow and resist it by any means possible such as grabbing onto a passing low tree branch. I was then asked: “And where do you stand?” To which I replied: “On the river bank, wondering why all these idiots are in the water anyway.” Page 1 Introduction Life presents many challenges, some of which offer solutions, sometimes solutions arise and sometimes you have to create a solution. The latter has been the case for me on several occasions. However, for the most part, life has taught me to discern what guidance I take and how to better sort and maximise the information available. To arrive at a solution, you must first have an idea. We only advance by ideas, so let me share my ideas for your advancement - Anthony J. Ashton. Page 2 Are You Speeding? The driver was speeding down the the street only to be caught by a policeman’s speed gun. Now stop and reread that last paragraph. Did you spot the grammar mistake? "the" was repeated at the beginning of the second line after it had been written previously at the end of the first line. Lesson: Slow down and absorb what is taking place rather than rushing. When you take time, you gain time because you are less likely to make mistakes that cost time and often money to fix. A lot of people seem to be in a hurry today as if their life depended on the task being finished in record time. By taking time, your blood pressure and stress levels will be lower and you will be able to enjoy the experience of what you do. You don’t see a lot of scenery travelling at 100 mph so slow down and enjoy the journey. Page 3 Examples of things that take time, but I enjoy doing: • Preparing and drinking real coffee • Listening to vinyl • Cycling • Photography with a real camera • Playing the piano People generally prefer to be around relaxed people because they subsequently feel more relaxed too. So, make a conscious decision to slow down just enough to consider everything and then you can begin to enjoy life better. While you read this book, take your time, unwind with a drink and enjoy what has been more than ten years in writing. Page 4 Weight a Minute! There's an easy way to become slim? Disclaimer: Any information found in this chapter is for reference purposes only. Always consult a doctor for advice before starting any new diet. Albert Einstein stated that: “Energy cannot be created or destroyed, it can only be changed from one form to another.” So how does the First Law of Thermodynamics help you lose weight? Calories = Energy For this reason, calories are measured in Joules because they are energy. An average adult man uses about 2000 calories per day (more or less 500 depending on the factors). So what happens if the man eats a 1200-calorie diet? There is an energy deficit and then the body uses the fat reserves to replenish the energy needed. Voila! Welcome to weight loss 101. Page 5 The Food / Exercise Relationship If your daily calorie goal is 1200 and you eat 1400 calories but do 300 calories of exercise, your body has 1100 calories available to use. This means that you are 100 calories under the 1200 target and if you are an average male requiring 2000 calories then your body has to use 900 calories of the fat reserve. Diet is a lot more important than exercise during weight loss. However, you can use exercise to increase your daily available calories left, so you can treat yourself to that glass of wine and make no negative impact on your diet. A small glass of red wine is about 100 calories, so if you find yourself at 1100 calories on an evening then have a guilt- free glass! Not All Foods Are Created Equally I stick to a low-fat, low-sugar, high-protein diet. You’d be amazed at how much fat sneaks into food at any opportunity. This is also true of sugar and salt. My plant- based diet of seven years helps me avoid fats but not entirely. This is because high fats and sugars are found in most processed foods, thus avoid them where possible. Page 6
