It describes the main components of the machine and microcode with emphasis on new features. This edition is the result of several residencies at the ITSC Raleigh. Much of the content results directly from installing and testing different configurations of the 3174. This document has been written for systems engineers and technical members of customer organizations involved in the installation, customization and maintenance of the IBM 3174 Establishment Controller. A very basic knowledge of IBM 3270 Information Display System has been assumed. The document is organized as follows: 1. Introduction to the IBM 3174 Establishment Controller This chapter offers a brief history of the evolution of the 3174 Controller from the first 3274 Control Unit up to the current range of machines. The various models available and the features, both hardware and microcode are introduced. 2. Pre-Installation Planning This chapter discusses the several tasks that when completed prior to installation of the 3174, contribute to the smooth installation of the controller. 3. Installation This chapter discusses the physical installation of the IBM 3174 Establishment Controller hardware. 4. Microcode and Customization This chapter describes the 3174 microcode and discusses its customization and installation. 5. The Token-Ring attaching models of the IBM 3174. This chapter covers the 3174 attached to a Token-Ring Network and presents such topics as performance, connectivity, customization, backup/recovery and considerations when installing them in different environments such as VM/SP, MVS and VSE. 6. 3174 X.25 Support Major aspects concerned with the 3174 working in a X.25 environment are documented here. Different scenarios of the 3174 with X.25 support are presented to the user. ix ©Copyright IBM Corp. 1986, 1991
