I love you all very much! Acknowledgments While I may be the only person with his name on the cover, a book of this size and scope is most definitely the work of several people, and those people deserve some very well-earned acknowledgment. Todd Jensen, acquisitions editor extraordinaire, retained his patience (and great sense of humor) as the book evolved over various deadlines and life interventions (including a little life intervention of his own—congratulations, Todd, on becoming a father for a second time). Brian Lich, technical editor, continues to prove himself an absolute professional and trusted friend. Aside from always answering my silly questions with tact (that is, not laughing directly at me for asking such questions in the first place), Brian is a virtual cornucopia of knowledge; there is very little, if anything, he doesn’t know about computers and technology in general. Having Brian’s skill applied to this project has made it a better book several times over. Special thanks are in order to Cathleen Snyder, copy editor, and Jenny Davidson, project editor. They (along with Brian) ensured the accuracy of this book’s content to a level that is beyond my comprehension;the three of them caught so many of my mistakes—technical, grammatical,or otherwise—I couldn’t imagine working on a project like this without them. Best of all, they are all incredibly funny and generally just plain cool people to work with. Can an author ask for anything more? An extra special nod to Jenny, who had to track this project over the inevitable content and structure revisions and keep everything coordinated and moving forward.Jenny,I owe you one. I’d also like to thank Dr. Chris Miller of the Indiana University School of Dentistry, who always encourages me to explore and develop my professional interests—I could not have completed this project (or several others) without his mentorship and support. Thanks as well to Stacy Hiquet of Premier Press for continuing to present project opportunities.Stacy,it is always a pleasure to work with you! Thanks as well to Donald Fagen, Walter Becker, and Robert Acknowledgments vii Zimmerman, as without their special creative talents this book would have been a lot less fun to work on (you need good music as you write, and these guys provided it over long hours of sitting at the computer). Finally, and as always,I’d like to give very special thanks to my family for always supporting and encouraging me while I worked on this and other projects. You make everything worthwhile, and I love you all very, very much. John Gosney August,2003 About the Author John W.
