Background Scott Springfield Mfg. Inc. founded in 1970, has evolved over the subsequent years to become a leading supplier of custom designed air handlers. Utilizing the latest technology to design and manufacture an institutional quality air handler, Scott Springfield’s engineering group provides our clientele with a flexible approach to solving specific air handling problems, in a timely manner. For both new construction and retrofit projects, Scott Springfield has applied the knowledge and technology to creatively respond to the client’s air handling needs. The product is distributed throughout Canada and the United States by a qualified network of representatives working closely with owners/engineers to insure a seamless transition from design to manufacture to field installation. Qualified factory personnel are available to assist during the installation where requested and are commonly used when retrofit projects are undertaken. Scott Springfield uses both industry technology and in house systems to optimize the air handler to conform with the latest industry standards. Designs take into consideration elements for effective mixing without stratification, minimal internal pressure loss, acoustics, casing integrity and indoor air quality issues. Major installations include; medical facilities, post and pre-secondary educational facilities, military and other government agencies as well as industrial organizations in oil and gas, pharmaceuticals and pulp and paper. Preface 00205 SSccootttt SSpprriinnggffiieelldd MMffgg.. IInncc.. Air Handler Design This catalogue presents the air handlers in a modular block format. This format has been chosen to allow the designer to maximum flexiblity and ease when laying out an air handler. The engineering for the product is based on the computer generated modules which are aligned to address the air handler requirements. All air handlers are manufactured as a complete unit. As a result, when units are split to meet project requirements or transportation limitations, the contractor is assured of an equipment match and reduced installation time. Capacities Scott Springfield units are manufactured for capacities from 1000 CFM (472 l/sec) to more than 100,000 CFM(47,194 l/sec) in a variety of configurations. Static pressure capabilities range up to 10"wg (2483 Pa) for commercial and institutional units and 15” wg (3725 Pa) for industrial applications. Casing & Floor Scott Springfield utilizes a panel type of and 2”(50.8mm) to 4”(101.6mm) deep. Fan Assemblies The fans used in Scott Springfield equipment are AMCA certified and selected for peak efficiency and acoustical characteristics. The fan assembly consists of a fan, motor and welded isolation base. They are mounted on isolators selected at the design conditions for optimal effectiveness. All fan motor bases are adjustable to tension belts appropriately. The appropriate spring isolators are computer selected and springs matched to the differing loads around the isolation base frame. For applications requiring seismic restraint, Scott Springfield mounts the fan assembly on either a housed isolator rated for the applicable seismic zone or OSHPD approved seismic restraint snubbers. The standard fan/motor assembly is provided with a belt guard with adjustable tachometer opening. All plenum fans have a protective fan screen enclosing the entire fan wheel. Bearings are fitted with lubrication lines extended to one side of the fan for ease of servicing and spacing. Mixing Sections Mixing sections are designed for The design standard calls for parallel effective blending of airstreams and eliminate blade dampers on the outside and return air to stratification across coils and filters. Damper direct the air flows against one another and thus velocities are optimized for pressure drop and improve mixing. (For those applications which maximum blending effectiveness. Maximum have a restricted distance for mixing or have large design velocity on mixing dampers is 1500 fpm temperature differentials between the outside and (7.6 m/sec). return air, blenders are recommended.) Access Doors Full sized access doors are designed into Scott Springfield equipment to facilitate regular maintenance requirements of the air handling unit. Standard door widths are 18"(457mm) and 24" (670mm) however wider door widths are available for special applications. The door is 2”(50.8mm) or 4”(101.6mm) double wall construction matched to the specified casing thickness. A separate steel frame ensures the door swings easily without binding. A double seal is used in addition to providing corner radius blank-offs to prevent leakage. The primary seal is a high grade automotive bulb seal which retains flexibility under compression and insures the air tightness. Windows are optional and provided on request. In addition, tool operated locks are available for projects where restricted access into the equipment is required.. Ventlok® 310 door hardware operational from both sides of the unit is standard. Preface 00205 SSccootttt SSpprriinnggffiieelldd MMffgg.. IInncc.. Finish All units are finished with a primer coat and then a coat of air dried enamel. Units are finished in the standard production colour or to suit a particular project requirement. An optional acrylic finish is offered for applications requiring a greater degree of corrosion or UV resistance. Refer to Scott Springfield engineering group for particulars. Quality Assurance P. R . HQ Draw Software Scott Springfield’s HQ Draw software program, available through local representatives, is based on the catalogued data. HQ Draw enables the designer to quickly model air handlers and modify the overall dimensions to suit the particular project in a prompt and efficient manner. Click and drop component selection with comprehensive help allows effortless design of Scott Springfield air handlers. Catalogue Material The catalogue sections are grouped and identified by content. As an example, the tab on the side (Section 2 Engineering Reference) and bottom (2-4) correspond the page to the section in the catalogue. I.e. 2-4 refers to section 2 page 4. In the top right hand corner the title identifies the topic of the current page. Within the page, the sections are divided by blue sub-headers, describing the topic of the individual sections. Tables and figures are identified first by section then by order, i.e. 2-3, section 2 figure 3, not, section 2 page 3. The five digit number on the bottom represents the catalogue reference number. The first section, HQ Draw air handler components is a modular representation of the more common options available. The dimensions have been established around the coil area required to maintain 500 fpm (2.53 m/sec) at the nominal air volume listed for each size. The concise tabular format enables the designer to readily select components needed to satisfy the design parameters of a project. Footnoted material in the catalogue and contained in the HQ Draw help file detail acceptable velocities, design considerations and other critical issues regarding the layout of an air handler. Scott Springfield engineers design the equipment accounting for actual air pressure drop across various components when selecting fans and specifying horsepower requirements.
