Student Performance Objectives Module 1 — Introduction to HP-UX Administration (cid:127) Identify responsibilities of a system administrator. (cid:127) Identify three sources of information for system administrators. Module 2 — Overview of SAM (cid:127) List two advantages and limitations of SAM. (cid:127) Start SAM in either graphical or terminal mode. (cid:127) Successfully navigate between menus in SAM. (cid:127) Use SAM to explore the system’s current configuration and resources. (cid:127) View and manipulate SAM object lists and dialog boxes. (cid:127) View the SAM log file. (cid:127) Use the restricted SAM builder to allow non-root users access to SAM. Module 3 —Creating and Managing User Accounts (cid:127) List the minimum requirements for a user account. (cid:127) Identify each field in the /etc/passwd file. (cid:127) Identify each field in the /etc/group file (cid:127) Create, modify, and delete a user account from SAM or the command line. (cid:127) Deactivate and reactivate a user account from SAM or the command line. Module 4 — Customizing User Accounts (cid:127) List configuration files read during the login process. 1 H3064S A.01 ©1999Hewlett-PackardCompany (cid:127) Change the user’s default path. (cid:127) Change the user’s default terminal type. (cid:127) Change the user’s prompt string. (cid:127) Change the user’s command line editor. (cid:127) Change the user’s default printer. (cid:127) Manage default configuration files in /etc/skel. Module 5 — Guided Tour of the HP-UX File Hierarchy (cid:127) Describe the reasons for separating dynamic and static file systems. (cid:127) Describe the key contents of /sbin, /usr, /stand, /etc, /dev, /var. (cid:127) Describe the key contents of /opt, /etc/opt, and /var/opt. (cid:127) Use find, whence, and whereis to find files in the HP-UX file system. Module 6 —Connecting Peripherals (cid:127) Describe the difference between workstations and servers. (cid:127) Define the following terms: bus, device adapter/interface, and hardware path. (cid:127) Compare and contrast the purpose of SCSI, serial, MUX, and parallel interfaces. (cid:127) View the current hardware configuration with ioscan. (cid:127) Use ioscan output to create a hardware diagram of the system. (cid:127) List the steps required to install a new interface card. (cid:127) List the steps required to connect a new SCSI, serial, or parallel device. Module 7 —Configuring Device Files (cid:127) Explain the purpose of a device file. (cid:127) Explain the significance of major and minor numbers. (cid:127) Differentiate between block and character i/o. (cid:127) Use lsdev to list kernel driver major numbers. (cid:127) Use ll to determine a device file’s major and minor numbers. (cid:127) Use ioscan to list device files associated with a specific device. (cid:127) Use lssf to interpret the characteristics of a device file. H3064S A.01 2 ©1999Hewlett-Packard Company
