Introduction
There is one thing that ahnost everybody in America agrees
about. Liberals and conservatives, rich and poor, atheists and
theists, labor and management, women and men, gay and
—
straight, prolife andprochoice, capitalists and socialists ^just
abouteverybodywithanose agreesthatourcultureisinwhat
onepresidentcalled"deep doo-doo."
Different groups have different explanations for the prob-
lem. Conservatives blame liberals, and liberals blame conser-
vatives. Straights blame gays, and gays blame straights.
Whites blame blacks, and blacks blame whites. Men blame
women, andwomenblame men.
Some saythatthere's no one toblame, that itjust happens.
That's the purest pessimism ofall. It means there's nothing
anybodycan do aboutit. SoAmerica is doomed, forifnobody
broke America, nobody can fix it. Ifthere's no cause, there's
nocure.
Americans have neverbelieved that before, except for Sto-
ics, fataUsts, Calvinists and Boston Red Sox fans. (Definition
ofa Red Soxfan: someone who comes to opening day with a
