WANG (27), Department of Phys- thesda, Maryland 29802 Preface This volume supplements Volumes 301 and 421 of Methods ni Enzy- mology, which also deal with neuroendocrine peptides, and is consider- ably less archival than its predecessors. In many cases the methods pre- sented include shortcuts and conveniences not included in the sources from which they were taken. The techniques are described in a context that allows comparisons to other related methodologies. The authors have been encouraged to do this in the belief that such comparisons are valu- able to readers who must adapt extant procedures to new systems. Also, so far as possible, methodologies have been presented in a manner that stresses their general applicability and potential limitations. Special atten- tion has been paid to statistics and means of data analysis and assessment. Although some topics for various reasons are not covered, the three volumes dealing with neuroendocrine peptides provide a substantial and current overview of the extant methodology in the field and a view of its rapid development. This volume does not include a cross-index since the recent, preceding volumes included comprehensive indexes. Since publication of Volume 124, most ancillary information is contained in Methods in Enzymology Volumes 139 Cellular Regulators (Part A: Calcium- and Calmodulin- Binding Proteins) and 141 Cellular Regulators (Part B: Calcium and Lipids). Particular thanks go to the authors for their attention to meeting dead- lines and for maintaining high standards of quality, to the series editors for their encouragement, and to the staff of Academic Press for their help and timely publication of the volume.
