Preview Hollywood in the Forties

Description:
A truly excellent book about Hollywood searching for new markets as the world began to change in 1939-40. This was - and who can doubt it? - the beginning of the end, in spite of a slew of great (and not so great) movies. 'The Maltese Falcon' remains a favourite of mine, but only partly because of Bogart; 'The Lost Weekend' and - especially - 'Double Indemnity' would also be on my list - but I'll take Ruby Keeler over Betty Grable any day of the week, and - needless to say - Laurel and Hardy over, say, Abbott and Costello. I would still argue that there was a deterioration overall in quality after around 1935. Was that because of the Code etc? Perhaps. Yet beauties like 'The Adventures Of Robin Hood', 'Angels With Dirty Faces' and 'Gone With The Wind' were, admittedly, yet to come.
